OED x CopperShed EDC Roundup: Five Handmade Copper and Brass Pieces Worth a Look

A roundup of five handmade copper and brass EDC pieces from the OED collaboration with CopperShed Metal Works, including bottle openers, a pry tool, and a pen stand.

Five handmade copper and brass EDC tools arranged in a row on concrete

Introduction

If you like EDC gear with a bit of character, the collaboration between OED and CopperShed Metal Works is an easy one to fall for. Every piece in this lineup is made in the USA, finished by hand, and arrives with a small card listing the style, the material, and the maker. These are small tools, but they feel like keepsakes.

The range covers five pieces: a copper bottle opener, a brass pry bar and bottle opener, a copper panel spike tool, a solid brass dual bottle opener, and a brass single pen stand. Here is how they compare.

Quick Take: CopperShed Metal Works

CopperShed Metal Works was founded by Ryan Forbes in Brookfield, Ohio, and all of the pieces in this collaboration are produced domestically. Each item carries the same signature design element on its base, and the finishes lean antique: copper and brass are hand sanded, darkened, then wet sanded again to create a warm, aged look that photographs beautifully and hides pocket wear well.

One thing worth knowing up front: these items are individually fairly pricey, so timing matters. At the time of writing, a flash sale offers 40% off, and a 30% code has been available for use after the sale. The codes cannot be stacked, so the sale window is the best moment to buy.

OED Copper Bottle Opener

The copper bottle opener is the entry point to the collaboration and a limited edition capped at 200 pieces, each individually serialized. It has a small prying edge, jimping along the spine for grip, and finger grooves that make it comfortable to hold during use. The hand-finished antique copper surface gives it real shelf appeal.

At 48 grams (about 1.7 oz), it is the lightest of the openers here, which makes it an easy pocket piece for anyone who wants a functional tool that doubles as a small collectible.

OED Panel Pry and Bottle Opener

The panel pry and bottle opener steps up in both size and capability. It is made of brass with a stainless steel inlay laser engraved with the OED logo, and it packs a bottle opener on the back, a noticeably larger prying surface, and a fairly large attachment point for lanyards or clips.

It is a thick, weighty slab of brass at 86 grams (about 3 oz), with well-executed chamfers and the same antique finish and signature base design as the rest of the range. It is available in brass or copper, with the copper version typically running about $5 more than the brass. Either way, it is one of the most versatile pieces here.

OED Panel Spike Bottle Opener

The panel spike takes the same formula as the panel pry and adds a spike on the end. Officially, that spike is for opening boxes, poking holes in beer cans, or cracking cans open. Unofficially, it reads as a self-defense tool too, which is arguably part of its appeal as a pocket piece.

It is made of copper here, with the same stainless steel inlay and laser engraved logo centered on the face, a larger attachment point, a bottle opener on the back, and large, comfortable finger grooves. At 108 grams (about 3.8 oz), it has real heft in the hand. Like the panel pry, it is offered in brass or copper.

OED Brass Dual Bottle Opener

The dual bottle opener is the heaviest of the openers at 118 grams (about 4.1 oz), and it is solid brass throughout. One end has a large hole for twisting off bottle caps, while the other end handles standard pry-off caps, so you are covered either way. The large attachment point and generous jimping along the top round out the design.

It also has obvious self-defense potential, and the blue cords fitted at the top are customizable: blue, purple, green, and black options are included with purchase. The green against brass is a particularly nice look. Note that this piece is only available in brass, not copper.

OED Brass Single Pen Stand

The final piece is the odd one out: a solid brass single pen stand rather than an opener. It has real weight to it, and once a pen is seated, it is not tipping over. The machined mill pattern around the body and the brushed antique finish on the base make it one of the best-looking desk accessories in the lineup.

Compatibility is worth checking before buying. It fits the old OED pen series but not the newer model, and if you are using a different pen, it accepts anything up to 0.49 inches in diameter, so most standard pens will fit.

Overall Buying Advice

All five pieces share the same handmade construction, antique finishing, and signature design detail, so the choice mostly comes down to use case. If you want a light, collectible opener, the copper bottle opener is the natural pick. For a genuinely useful pry tool, the panel pry is the strongest all-rounder. The panel spike adds box-opening and can-piercing utility, the dual opener covers every cap style with the most heft, and the pen stand is the one to choose if your EDC leans desk-bound.

Because these are individually fairly pricey, buying during the 40% flash sale is the smartest move; a 30% code has been available afterward, but the two cannot be combined.

Conclusion

The OED x CopperShed collaboration delivers small, well-made tools that feel far more considered than their size suggests. Whether you want a pocket opener, a pry tool, or a weighty desk pen stand, there is a piece here that earns its spot, and the limited, hand-finished nature of the range makes the sale window worth watching.
