Nitecore UT27 (800 Lumens) Review: A Lightweight Running Head Torch Worth a Look

The updated Nitecore UT27 now pushes 800 lumens on turbo mode while staying at just 74g, with warm and white light modes, USB-C charging, and a glow-in-the-dark battery tray.

Introduction

Head torches for running tend to force a compromise: bright enough to light technical trail, but light enough that you forget you’re wearing it. The updated Nitecore UT27 makes a strong case that you don’t have to choose. This is a refresh of a head torch that was already well regarded, and the headline change is significant: turbo output has jumped from 520 lumens to a full 800, yet the total weight stays at an incredibly light 74g including the head unit, strap and rechargeable battery.

What the UT27 Gets Right

The 74g weight is the standout. Because the whole unit, battery included, sits at the front of your head without noticeable bounce, longer night runs stay comfortable. The beam pattern is a soft, wide flood rather than a harsh spotlight, which lights up a big area ahead of you and is noticeably less fatiguing on the eyes over a few hours of running.

On top of that, the torch now offers three output modes instead of two: high at 500 lumens for around two and a half hours, mid at 280 lumens for about five and a half hours, and low at 100 lumens for an impressive 11 hours of burn time. Turbo mode, activated by a quick double press on either of the top buttons, delivers 800 lumens for roughly 30 seconds, ideal for getting out of a tricky section or checking the trail ahead. On a genuinely dark, root-and-rock strewn woodland trail, the extra output over the previous version is easy to notice.

Battery and Charging

The UT27 runs on a rechargeable 1,300mAh battery with a built-in USB-C charging port on the unit itself, so topping up is as simple as plugging in the included USB-C to USB-C cable. A charging indicator tells you when the battery is full.

Better still, the unit will also run on three standard AAA batteries, which is a genuinely useful fallback for longer events or race weekends. One detail worth celebrating is the glow-in-the-dark battery tray: a small touch, but it makes swapping batteries in the dark far easier.

Warm, White and Red Light Modes

The torch carries two primary light sources. On the right is warm light, which penetrates fog and mist far better than pure white light, making it a smart choice for autumn and winter running in damp conditions. On the left is standard white light, and there is also a red light mode, either constant or flashing, for visibility.

All modes are controlled through two large, textured yellow buttons on top of the unit, which are easy to find and operate in the dark without fumbling.

Comfort and Fit

The strap has been reworked with a new weave that feels softer against the skin, is more elasticated, and is more breathable thanks to small perforations running around it. It is fully adjustable, has silicone grippers at the front to stop it slipping, and reflective detailing for safer night running.

You also get 180 degrees of tilt adjustment so you can angle the beam exactly where you need it, plus a lockout feature that prevents the torch switching on accidentally inside a race vest or bag and draining the battery.

Durability

The UT27 carries an IP66 waterproof rating and is impact resistant up to one metre, which should hold up well against the rain, mud and knocks that night running gear has to endure.

Who It’s For

This is a head torch for runners first and foremost: compact, featherweight and with enough turbo output for technical trail. But it also works well for anyone needing a reliable, lightweight head lamp for walking or general outdoor use. Whether it’s your first head torch or you’re upgrading an older unit, the combination of 800-lumen turbo, dual battery options and a 74g weight makes it easy to recommend.

Conclusion

The updated Nitecore UT27 earns its refresh. The jump to 800 lumens on turbo is the headline, but the details are what make it a strong buy: the glow-in-the-dark battery tray, the softer breathable strap, USB-C charging with AAA backup, warm light for foggy conditions and a comfortable, bounce-free fit. Priced around £64.95, though often found online for closer to £50, it represents great value for serious night runners.
