Milwaukee M18 Fuel Utility Fencing Stapler 2843 Review: A Serious Upgrade for Wire Fencing Work

Milwaukee's M18 Fuel fencing stapler fires nine-gauge staples with strong runtime and well-balanced ergonomics, though it locks you into Milwaukee-brand staples.

Introduction

Anyone who has hammered staples into a power pole or stretched miles of barbed wire knows how punishing that work is. The Milwaukee M18 Fuel Utility Fencing Stapler 2843 promises to ease that pain, and we put it to work building wire fencing for new horse paddocks in Georgia to see how it stacks up against the other fencing staplers we have used.

Who This Tool Is For

This is a specialist tool built for utility and fencing work: wire fencing, barbed wire runs, and utility stapling where hand-hammering is slow and hard on the body. If you regularly set fence staples, the 2843 is aimed squarely at you.

The headline feature is that it can fire nine-gauge staples. Ten-gauge staples are easier to fire and most cordless staplers stop there, so a successful nine-gauge model is genuinely rare. Heavier nine-gauge staples hold better in demanding utility applications, which is exactly what this tool is built around.

Main Strengths

As an M18 Fuel tool, the 2843 uses brushless motor technology for better performance and runtime. The runtime estimates are impressive: on a 3.0 Ah High Output battery, expect up to 600 staples per charge. For most users, that is all-day runtime without adding the weight of a higher-capacity battery.

The overall shape differs from Milwaukee’s cordless framing nailer. The handle area is specifically designed to be easy to work with whether you are wearing leather or insulated gloves, which utility work often requires. There is also a large lanyard loop so you can tether the 2843 while working off the ground.

It is a beefy tool. Bare, it weighs just under 10 lbs, and a 3.0 Ah High Output battery brings it to 11.2 lbs. Even so, the design team spent considerable time dialing in the ergonomics: the tool balances really well both in hand and while driving staples, which keeps long days of fencing more manageable than the weight numbers suggest.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Here is the main caveat: you have to use Milwaukee-brand staples with this tool. They use a diamond crown shape specifically designed for its driving mechanism. That said, we have had to buy tool-specific staples for other cordless staplers, so this is not a surprise. A pack of 960 staples runs $89 to $109 depending on size, available from Home Depot with free home or store delivery. That is noticeably less than the comparable Festool staple combination, and a few dollars more than DeWalt staples.

The magazine holds up to 45 staples, and loading is refreshingly simple: drop the pusher down until it locks just like a nailer, slide the staples across the back of the magazine, then release the pusher. That is the whole process.

The weight is the other consideration. Just under 10 lbs bare is substantial, but the balance mitigates it in use.

Buying Advice

The 2843 retails at $599 for the bare tool and $799 as a kit with two 3.0 Ah High Output batteries and a charger. Milwaukee backs it with a five-year warranty.

If you spend real hours driving fence or utility staples, the ability to fire nine-gauge staples with strong battery runtime makes this an easy recommendation. If you only fence occasionally, the tool-specific staple cost and the bare-tool price are worth weighing against cheaper ten-gauge alternatives.

Conclusion

The Milwaukee M18 Fuel Utility Fencing Stapler 2843 does the job it was built for: faster, easier, and more consistent stapling in demanding utility and fencing work. The rare nine-gauge capability, all-day runtime on a compact battery, and well-balanced design outweigh the proprietary staple requirement for anyone doing this work regularly.
