Metabo HPT 36V Rear Handle Circular Saw Review: A Lightweight Powerhouse
Metabo HPT's 36V rear handle circular saw pairs serious cutting power with a featherweight 10.69 lb frame, earning a 9.5 out of 10 in our workshop testing.
Introduction
Rear handle circular saws tend to live at the heavier end of the cordless tool spectrum, which is exactly what makes Metabo HPT’s 36V entry interesting. At a claimed 10.69 lb, it is a genuine featherweight for the category, and after spending quality time with it in the shop, it has become a fan favorite. It earns a 9.5 out of 10 in our evaluation, and we think it will be very competitive on the job site.
Who This Product Is For
This saw suits framers, remodelers, and serious DIY users who want rear-handle control and 36V-class power without the usual weight penalty. It runs off a single Metabo HPT MultiVolt battery, so anyone already in that battery platform can add this saw as a bare tool and keep their kit lean. It is also OSHA compliant and tether ready, which matters for anyone working at height.
Design and Build Quality
The shoe and blade cover are both magnesium, keeping weight down without giving up rigidity. The bevel scale offers three positive stops: 0, 45, and 53 degrees, with the 53 degree stop accessed by shifting slightly past the front. Cut line indicators are present at 0 and 45 degrees; there is no indicator at 53 degrees, which is typical of other saws we have handled.

One of the first things you notice is the handle. It is beefy, to say the least, but it feels secure thanks to a quality rubber over-mold. Even with sweaty hands, the saw is easy to hang onto.
Ergonomics and Handling
Beyond the grip, Metabo HPT has thought about real-world carry and safety. A rafter hook sits on the side of the tool and hangs comfortably and securely on two-by material. For anyone working on saw horses or at elevation, that small detail gets used constantly.
The blade cover is another highlight: it operates smoothly and never hung up during our testing, which keeps cuts flowing without awkward repositioning.

Cutting Performance
We ran the saw through cross cuts at 0 degrees, bevel cuts, and compound miter cuts. On bevel cuts, the front 45 degree marker requires some attention: our testing showed you need to line up dead square in the middle of the groove, at its base rather than either side, to stay on your line. Aim to the side and you drift low or high.
Arguably, compound cuts are challenging for any circular saw, but this one moved at a decent pace and made it through with relative ease. Cut line visibility is excellent from either side, so right-handed and left-handed users will both be fine.
Things to Consider Before Buying
There are a few omissions worth knowing about. There is no on-tool storage for the blade change wrench, which is easy to misplace in a busy shop even though blade changes can be done on the fly. There is also no dust blower at the front of the housing, so the cut line can get gummed up with sawdust, particularly indoors. And there is no LED work light; outdoors this is a non-issue, but inside, shadows can fall across your line.

None of these are deal-breakers given how the saw otherwise performs, but they are the things we would like to see added in future iterations.
Buying Advice
As a bare tool, the Metabo HPT rear handle saw retails for $199. It is also available as a kit for $349 that includes a single 4Ah MultiVolt battery and a charger, and both can be found at your favorite Metabo HPT dealer. If you already own MultiVolt batteries, the bare tool is the clear value play; if you are starting fresh, the kit gets you cutting out of the box.

The power to weight ratio is what makes this saw special in a category that skews heavy, so if that balance appeals to you, it is an easy recommendation at either price point.
Conclusion
Metabo HPT’s 36V rear handle circular saw combines lightweight magnesium construction, strong cut-line visibility, and confident cutting performance in a package that is easy to live with. The missing wrench storage, dust blower, and work light are minor gripes rather than flaws, and a 9.5 out of 10 reflects just how well the rest of the package comes together.
