Metabo HPT 18V Lineup: Compact Batteries, Palm Sander, and Caulk Gun Worth a Look

Three practical Metabo HPT 18V releases: a new 4Ah compact battery with a fuel gauge, a brushless palm sander, and a variable-speed caulk gun.

Introduction

Metabo HPT has been quietly expanding its 18V platform, and the latest wave of releases is aimed squarely at people who run compact and sub-compact tools. The lineup includes new compact batteries (now with a fuel gauge), an 18V palm sander, and an 18V caulk gun. Prices on Metabo HPT tools have been coming down in most cases, while the quality remains right up there with top-tier professional brands, which makes this a good moment to look at what is new.

The New Compact Battery Lineup

The new compact batteries are designed primarily for Metabo HPT’s compact and sub-compact tools. They come in kits as well as two-packs if you want to save a little money, and they offer a small footprint with a fuel gauge on the front, a welcome addition for keeping an eye on state of charge.

The standout is the new 4 amp hour compact battery. It is slightly larger than the 1.5Ah, 2Ah, and older 3Ah packs, but it keeps the same general compact form factor and will also accept the multivolt tools’ philosophy of flexibility: you can still run a multivolt battery if you want maximum output, but the 4Ah compact gives you a lighter alternative without giving up much power.

Battery Test Results

To see how these batteries actually perform, we ran voltage tests driving a drill through thick 4x4 lumber, which introduces enough wood variance to expose differences between packs. The 1.5Ah battery did not give us much performance, cutting out early. The new 2Ah battery, which includes the fuel gauge, started at a slightly higher voltage and stepped up noticeably, though it cut out just a bit sooner in one pass, possibly due to wood differences.

The older 3Ah battery, which does not have the fuel gauge, stopped at roughly the same point as the 2Ah pack. There is a possibility the 2Ah uses higher-discharge cells, and from this testing it seems likely, though the 3Ah still performed well.

The 4Ah compact battery, with its larger cells, clearly rocked it out. The first hole went all the way through, and there is no doubt about the increase in power. On top of that, you get considerably more runtime simply because it is a 4Ah pack. If you are running 18V tools, this 4Ah battery is the ticket.

Metabo HPT 18V Palm Sander

The new 18V palm sander fits the 2Ah compact battery, and you can still comfortably reach in to check the state of charge. It is comfortable to hang onto, runs a brushless motor, and includes a dust bag, or you can hook up a vacuum instead. Two push buttons on the front control power, and the speed adjusts from one to six.

In use, it produces very little vibration and runs quiet, which makes it a pleasant tool for extended sanding sessions. Switching to the 4Ah battery raises the sander up slightly, but it never gets in the way; there is still room to rest your hand off to the side or use the battery as a wrist rest. Even with the larger battery, it remains very comfortable.

Metabo HPT 18V Caulk Gun

The 18V caulk gun is designed for 10 oz tubes and includes a piercer at the front. It is well suited to long use sessions: a locking button holds the plunger back in position, and a dial on the bottom regulates the maximum speed. You can also use the trigger for variable speed, and an LED light turns on while it runs.

The trigger is what makes this tool. It goes from very slow to fast and is easy to regulate, and when you let off, the gun pulls back slightly so there is no lingering pressure on the caulk or glue. That is a genuinely sweet detail. These guns work great if you are running a lot of glue or long caulk lines and do not need that manual squeeze feel in your hand. Some people love powered caulk guns, some hate them, but this one seems really nice, and the trigger is excellent.

Buying Advice

If you are already in Metabo HPT’s 18V platform, the 4Ah compact battery is the easiest upgrade to justify. It delivered measurably more power and runtime than the smaller packs in our testing, and the added fuel gauge makes it easy to keep track of charge. The 2Ah pack is a solid middle ground with the same modern fuel gauge, while the 1.5Ah is best reserved for light-duty sub-compact work.

For the tools themselves, the palm sander suits anyone who wants a quiet, low-vibration cordless sanding option, and the caulk gun makes sense for framers, finishers, and anyone running long bead lines. You can always step up to Metabo HPT’s 36V tools for more power, but for sub-compact-class tools, these performed quite well.

Conclusion

Metabo HPT’s latest 18V additions are practical, well-built, and priced lower than you might expect. The 4Ah compact battery stands out as the most impactful upgrade of the group, delivering both power and runtime, while the palm sander and caulk gun round out a growing compact platform with thoughtful details like fuel gauges, excellent triggers, and vacuum-ready dust management.
