Maxpedition Keystone Versipack Review: One Bag, Two Ways to Carry

A dual-duty EDC bag that works as both a sling bag and a fanny pack, built from 1050 denier nylon with YKK zippers throughout.

Introduction

Maxpedition has spent more than two decades building a reputation in the everyday carry space, covering everything from small pouches to day packs and duffels. The Keystone Versipack is a good example of how much that experience shows. On paper it is a fanny pack. It is also a sling bag. In practice, it is designed to work well as either, which is rarer than it sounds.

Who This Bag Is For

Sling bags and fanny packs share a lot of DNA but are not always interchangeable. A sling bag is fast to access on the move: flip it around and reach it with one hand, though a well-fitting sling is naturally a little asymmetrical and can be awkward worn at the waist. A good fanny pack is the opposite: stable enough for high-mobility activities, which is why ski patrollers use them, and easy to swing forward into a working shelf, which is why anglers love them.

The Keystone Versipack is aimed at people who want both behaviors from a single bag. It gets a wide strap and a unique shape that departs from the conventional bulky fanny pack silhouette, and crucially it uses dual-sided zippers so it opens properly in either mode.

Inside the Keystone Versipack

Working front to back, there is a small zippered pouch on the front end, also with a dual-sided zipper. That matters for sling duty because one side will always be up, and the fairly symmetrical back lets you choose which orientation you prefer. Hook-and-loop surfaces appear in several places.

Inside the main pouch there is a small divider, and the rear panel has loop material for attaching accessories. Two smaller pouches separated by mesh sit on one side, and the rear area accepts more kit, such as a plier carrier that cinches down to keep tools where you want them. Maxpedition also makes a range of hook pouches that can drop into the rear section or the main cavity, letting you subdivide the space for kit-specific setups and add a bit of extra security.

Wearing It as a Sling Bag

As a sling, the bag rides over one shoulder and rolls around the body like a loop, giving access front or back. With the zippers lined up, you can open it on the move without spilling contents, which is the whole point of the dual-zipper design. If a bag has only one zipper and that zipper ends up at the bottom when worn as a sling, you cannot open it easily without risking losing everything inside.

Wearing It as a Fanny Pack

Cinched at the waist, the bag tightens down nicely and stays put without bouncing. Loosen the strap slightly, roll it around, and you have a small working shelf in front of you with every pocket accessible. With multiple pockets, items go in and come out individually, and because the zippers crossing the top are double-sided, you can stagger them to make the opening smaller while working.

Waist pack cinched snugly at the hips during an outdoor activity

The way the strap attaches is a detail worth flagging. On many fanny packs the belt is simply fixed at the edges of the bag, so snugging it down does nothing to pull the contents against your body and the bag flops around. Here the strap pulls around and cinches the actual bag tight against you, which is one of the first things worth checking on any waist pack.

Build Quality and Materials

The fabric is 1050 denier nylon with a visibly textured, beefy weave, made in Vietnam alongside much of today’s best technical textile production. All zippers are YKK, there is paracord on the pulls, and the exterior runs seatbelt-style webbing plus MOLLE rows across the top, enough to clip on carabiners or other accessories. The underside has no mounting points, just sheer durability.

One attachment the author of this configuration values is a place to hang bear spray, hooked on and slid down the side so it rides securely and can be popped loose quickly. Many sling bags lack a good bear spray attachment point, so having one designed in is a genuine advantage for anyone spending time outdoors.

Buying Advice

These are not cheap bags, but they are quality pieces, and that is the trade worth making if you plan to use something hard and count on it. The dual-duty design also softens the price math: it behaves like two packs in one, so you can divide the cost in half and look at it that way. If you only ever carry one way, a dedicated sling or waist pack may suit you better, but if your use changes with the activity, this is one of the few bags where both modes genuinely work.

Conclusion

The Maxpedition Keystone Versipack earns its keep by not forcing a choice between two carry styles. Dual-sided zippers, a symmetrical back, a strap that actually cinches the bag to your body, and a 1050 denier nylon shell with YKK hardware throughout make it a durable, flexible option for anyone whose EDC needs shift between fast-access sling mode and stable waist-pack mode.
