Manchester Half Marathon: Race Kit Tested, From Race Shoes to Smartwatches

A half marathon debrief covering the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 race shoe and how the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 2 Jet Black handled race day tracking.

Introduction

We ran the Manchester Half Marathon to put a full set of race-day kit through its paces: the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 as the race shoe, plus the Apple Watch Series 10 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 Jet Black worn side by side for tracking. The conditions were near ideal, around 10 degrees with hardly any wind, and both of us came away with times we were happy about. Here is how the race went and what we thought of the kit.

The Race: Manchester Half Marathon

The course stood out immediately. It is largely flat with only a few small climbs that are easy to dismiss, and it rewards you with some fairly immediate downhill sections afterwards. The roads are wide, which brings a Spanish-race feel: no narrow funneling sections, just plenty of space to run. Organization was smooth at both the start and the finish, and there was plenty of water on course.

One honest caveat: the crowds are not massive. If you want spectators lining every street, this is not that kind of race. But as a fast, well-organized half marathon, it delivers. One of us ran 1:29 on limited training, quicker than the previous attempt at the same event, and the other clocked 1:25 in a debut outing despite only a few weeks back in training, a promising sign ahead of a Valencia PB attempt.

Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3: The Race Shoe

The headline kit test was the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3, worn by both runners for the full 13.1 miles. The short version: this shoe has closed the gap to the top tier of carbon-plated racers. The previous version was responsive but lacked bounce and did not feel like a modern carbon plate shoe. This one does. It feels light, rolls through the stride nicely, and delivers a noticeable bounce in combination with the carbon plate, giving real efficiency gains.

Consistency was a recurring theme. The shoe felt stable and controlled over the half marathon distance, and it helped maintain pace without extra effort. Compared with other go-to race shoes such as the Alphafly 1, Vaporfly 2, Vaporfly 3, and Adios Pro Evo-style options, there was no noticeable performance gap. The feel sits closest to something like the Vaporfly 2 rather than the bigger Alphafly silhouette. For anyone choosing a top-tier carbon racer for a marathon or half marathon, this is now a legitimate option where it previously was not.

Apple Watch Series 10 vs Ultra 2 Jet Black on Race Day

Both watches were worn fully charged from the morning, with the Ultra 2 paired to a heart rate monitor. The Ultra 2 Jet Black is not hugely different from the previous Ultra 2 from a features point of view, which matched expectations.

On race day, distance tracking generally matched the course markers well. The Series 10 showed a small lag early on, which was anticipated, but it was not far off. The Ultra 2 landed closer to the marked distances. Battery told a similar story: the Series 10 showed more battery drop-off over the morning than the Ultra 2, even with the extra accessory connected. As an overall smartwatch experience during the race, the Series 10 was solid, with a fuller review to follow once more long-term testing is complete.

Overall Buying Advice

If you are shopping for a carbon-plated race shoe this season, the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 now belongs on the same shortlist as the established top-tier options, particularly for half marathon and marathon racing. If you are choosing between the two watches for race tracking, the Ultra 2 edges ahead on distance accuracy and battery endurance, while the Series 10 remains a very capable everyday option that handled the race distance well.

The combination tested here worked: a race shoe that felt like it was actively helping, and tracking that stayed close to the official markers from start to finish.

Conclusion

The Manchester Half proved to be a fast, well-organized course with plenty of room to run, and both runners left with strong times and positive impressions. The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 delivered a genuine upgrade over its predecessor and now competes with the best carbon racers, while the Apple Watch Ultra 2 Jet Black and Series 10 both handled race tracking admirably, with the Ultra 2 the more accurate and efficient of the two on the day.
