Running Head Torches
Lucifer S2X Running Head Torch Review: Czech-Built Precision for Dark Trails
A 165g rechargeable running headlamp with CNC-milled aluminium construction, 1200 lumens of boost output and honest burn times that make it a serious contender for night running and ultra racing.
Introduction
Every now and then a brand you have never heard of turns up with a product that genuinely surprises you. Lucifer Lights is a Czech manufacturer that builds all of its head torches in the Czech Republic using largely European parts, and its founder is confident enough to claim his headlamps will outperform anything else we have tested. The Lucifer S2X is the model aimed squarely at the running market, and after a couple of months of testing it on dark trails and coastal paths, it has made a strong impression.
Lucifer’s range runs from the Z1 at 800 lumens up to the Lucifer Ultra, a claimed 7500-lumen unit the company describes as the most powerful head torch in the world. The S2X sits in that line-up as a running-focused lamp, and it brings some unusually serious engineering to the category.
Who This Product Is For
The S2X is built for runners who spend real time in the dark: winter road miles, technical night sections, and long ultra races where a headlamp sits on your head for hours at a stretch. If you have ever suffered the pressure headache that comes from an uncomfortable strap after several hours, this lamp’s design priorities will make sense to you.
It also suits runners who care about beam quality in poor weather. The 4500k neutral white colour temperature cuts through misty, foggy and rainy conditions better than cooler or warmer alternatives, improving judgement of terrain and your usable distance of vision. For coastal running in sea mist, that is a genuine advantage.

Main Strengths
Build quality is where the S2X separates itself. The lamp body is CNC-milled from aerospace aluminium and anodised, with fins machined into the rear to disperse heat and prevent overheating. The battery and head unit are split to spread weight more evenly while running, connected by a high-current cable injection-moulded in Lucifer’s own workshop. All electronics are built in house and driven by an 8-bit Atmel microcontroller.

The S2X also uses constant current regulation, so light intensity holds steady as the battery discharges. When the battery can no longer supply the current for your chosen setting, the circuit steps down rather than letting the light suddenly switch off. It also means the published burn times should be unusually accurate.
Other practical strengths include a 165g total weight including battery, an IP66 waterproof rating, a soft protective pouch, a built-in battery indicator that flashes between one and five times to show remaining capacity, and a fully customisable build system on Lucifer’s website covering battery, optics, LEDs and even the head unit colour. Charging takes about six hours from flat, with a red or green indicator on the charging lead, though UK buyers will need an adapter for the supplied plug.
Light Output and Burn Times
The S2X uses two high-powered Cree XP-L2 LEDs at a 4500k colour temperature, producing a pleasant neutral white light with a better colour spectrum than most. On the lower intensity setting, you get 100 hours at 25 lumens, 20 hours at 100 lumens, 10 hours at 225 lumens, four hours at 470 lumens, and one hour 40 minutes on the 950-lumen boost mode.
Switch to the higher intensity setting and the low figures stay the same, but you get three hours at 600 lumens and one hour 10 minutes on the 1200-lumen max boost. The 225-lumen setting with its 10-hour run time comfortably covers a night section of a summer 100-miler without a battery swap, while 600 lumens is bright enough to run at speed on any terrain. As with all head torches, severe weather can affect these timings.

Things to Consider Before Buying
The mode system has a learning curve. It took a couple of reads of the instruction book to get comfortable switching between settings and modes, though the single large button becomes straightforward with use.
Comfort is mostly excellent. The wide elasticated headband is soft and fully adjustable, the lamp has a contoured padded back plate, and the included top strap keeps the unit secure with no bounce. There are two caveats, though. The durable connecting cable is somewhat bulky on the head strap, and the battery pack has no padding or back plate at all, so the battery sits directly on the back of your head. For two or three hours that was fine, but over a six to ten hour race it could become noticeable. A bit of padding there would have helped.
At around £125 it is not the cheapest head torch on the market, so it makes sense mainly for runners who will genuinely use the build quality and burn times.

Buying Advice
If you want a bright, well-engineered head torch with honest burn times and you are happy to pay for quality manufacturing, the S2X deserves a place on your shortlist. The 470-lumen setting with four hours of run time, or 225 lumens for ten hours, covers most night racing scenarios. Runners who prefer to configure their own specification will also enjoy Lucifer’s build-your-own approach to batteries, optics and LED choice.
Conclusion
The Lucifer S2X is one of the best-made running head torches we have spent time with. The engineering is exceptional, the neutral white beam handles mist and rain well, and the burn times are long enough for serious night racing. The unpadded battery pack and slightly fiddly mode system are worth knowing about, but neither undermines what is otherwise a genuinely impressive lamp from a brand worth watching.
