Keyport Versa 58: Modular Scales That Give Your Small Swiss Army Knife New Life

A Kickstarter modular scale system for 58 mm Swiss Army knives, reviewed alongside the Victorinox Classic SD, Midnite Manager, and Jetsetter it upgrades.

Introduction

Swiss Army knife fans have been asking for years for new ideas in the classic 58 mm range: new tools, new features, fresh thinking. The core red-scale lineup has seen very little change, with only a handful of additions in recent years. Where that demand goes unanswered, someone eventually steps in, and that is exactly what Keyport has done with its new Versa 58 system.

The idea is simple but clever: instead of replacing the knife itself, the Versa 58 replaces the Celidor plastic scales on small 58 mm Victorinox knives with modular, swappable panels that add genuinely useful features. Having spent time with early samples, this is a system that breathes new life into knives many of us already own.

What the Versa 58 System Is

The Versa 58 is a range of scale modules designed to fit small 58 mm Swiss Army knives in place of the original plastic scales. The panels are made from anodized aluminium, with premium titanium versions expected at launch, and each module carries a specific feature. A scale tool slot accepts the original toothpick or tweezers, or an aftermarket ferro rod for fire-starting capability.

The execution feels considered. Keyport has spent roughly two decades developing modular everyday carry tools, and it shows in details like the spring-tensioned locking clip that holds each module firmly in place. The system was set to launch on Kickstarter, with a starter set of two scale modules plus a MagMount pair expected to list at around $60 in aluminium, heavily discounted for backers. Individual modules can be purchased separately, and Keyport ships worldwide.

The Clip Module

The deep carry pocket clip is one of the most requested features people want on a Swiss Army knife, and it is the first module in the lineup. While the larger 91 mm knives arguably need a clip more, this is still a very practical addition at 58 mm: the knife sits at the top of a pocket, ready to grab without rummaging around. The scale tool slot is included here too, so you lose nothing in the swap.

The Flare Flashlight Module

The Flare module is arguably the standout of the range. A single click switch cycles through modes: a low but very usable front-facing white LED, a super bright output, and then a bright diffused sidelight that illuminates an area without dazzling people nearby. A fourth press, or a press and hold, switches it off. Despite the small size, it recharges via USB-C.

Victorinox does build a small light into models like the Signature Lite and the Midnite Manager, but those use a momentary push switch, a single light level, no sidelight, and a disposable button cell. The Flare is thicker than the built-in option, but it delivers far more practicality, and crucially it brings a genuinely functional light to any 58 mm model, not just the two that currently have one.

The USB-C Drive Module

Next is a USB-C flash drive module available in 64 GB and 256 GB capacities. It is machined in aluminium rather than plastic, rotates open, and is held closed by two tiny sprung steel bearings, a telling detail about the design effort involved. There is also a neat lanyard carry loop.

Victorinox once offered a USB drive on the 58 mm Jetsetter @58, but that was only 32 GB and appears to be discontinued. For anyone who regularly carries or transfers files, this module fills a gap that has been empty for a while.

The Pen Module

The integrated pen module has a push lock and a replaceable quality Troika ballpoint refill. Victorinox already offers a pen option at this size, but only on three models: the Signature Lite, Midnite Manager, and MiniChamp. If you want a pen on any other knife, this becomes the obvious choice, and pleasingly the thickness matches the Victorinox version exactly.

The VScale Module

Rounding out the launch lineup is the VScale, a simple aluminium or titanium scale panel with a cutout for a single scale tool. It is the minimalist option, useful for balancing a build or keeping one side of the knife low-profile. More module options are expected to follow after launch.

Installation: Swapping the Scales

Fitting the modules is easier than it might sound. Slide a knife blade carefully under the original scales, keeping your hand clear of the blade, then give a quick twist at each end. The scales release, revealing four raised rivet heads. To install a module, hold it over the rivets and slide it forward until it clicks into place on the spring-tensioned locking clip. Removal is a press-and-slide motion that feels fiddly the first couple of times, then quickly becomes second nature.

One caveat: removing original scales usually strips a little plastic at the rivet points, so they will not refit as securely afterward. Soaking the scales in hot water for a few minutes softens the plastic before removal and helps avoid this. A dedicated USB-C drive module and the Flare on a Classic SD makes a compelling everyday pairing.

Which Knives Benefit Most

The Midnite Manager already packs a light, a pen, and a practical tool set, so it is arguably perfect as it is. But an older model with the old-style red LED is an ideal candidate: strip the LED scales, fit a Flare module, and the knife gets a meaningful upgrade and a new lease of life.

The Classic SD, Victorinox’s bestselling knife, is another great match. Its knife, screwdriver with diamond file, and excellent mini scissors pair beautifully with a pocket clip on one side and the Flare on the other, in both looks and practicality.

A Flight-Friendly Travel Companion

The Jetsetter @58 deserves a special mention. With no blade, it is one of the few Swiss Army knives typically allowed through airport security, carrying just the small scissors and a combination tool. Fitted with Versa 58 modules, it becomes a genuinely useful travel tool: a built-in pen for filling in documents on the go, and a USB-C drive for backing up phone photos or carrying copies of important travel documentation.

And if security does take a particular interest, you can quickly remove the scales and hand over a bare Jetsetter.

MagMount Plates and Buying Advice

The MagMount plates come as a pair and attach magnetically to any two scale modules, letting you combine two modules into a single tool without a host knife at all. It also introduces a fidget element that will appeal to some. The downside is that the pair ends up as thick as a single-layer knife while offering none of the tools, which feels like wasted space unless the fidget factor specifically appeals. For most people, pairing the modules with a host knife gets the full benefit.

Starter sets are expected around $60 in aluminium, with a Kickstarter discount at launch and individual module pricing depending on which ones you choose.

Conclusion

The Keyport Versa 58 is a rare thing: genuine innovation in the small Swiss Army knife space, arriving from outside rather than from Victorinox itself. The build quality impresses, the attachment system works well, and the launch modules cover the features users have wanted for years. It breathes new life into older 58 mm knives and gives fresh reasons to carry and invest in the existing range. And if a 91 mm version ever follows, the possibilities get even more interesting.
