A detailed look at the JamesLee Design Quantua wallet, a handmade full grain leather wallet with a distinctive cross-stitch pattern and thoughtful card access.

Introduction

The JamesLee Design Quantua wallet is a handmade leather wallet that brings a distinctive cross-stitch pattern to a classic front-pocket design. Made in the United States from full grain veg tan leather sourced from a noted Italian tannery, it aims to combine thoughtful construction with a visually interesting aesthetic.

The wallet arrives in a nondescript white box with a burlap bag inside, a simple presentation that lets the product speak for itself. The Quantua, which translates to cross stitch, features that pattern prominently across the back, and it is available in a navy and chestnut color combination that gives it a refined look.

Who This Wallet Is For

This wallet is designed for people who appreciate handmade leather goods and want something that will develop character over time. The full grain leather construction means it will stretch and shape around whatever you carry, and the patina should look increasingly appealing with use.

It works well as a front-pocket wallet, though it can also be used in a rear pocket if preferred. The compact dimensions of 3.9 by 3.1 by 0.5 inches and a weight of 2.2 ounces or 63 grams make it a reasonably slim option for everyday carry.

Design and Build Quality

The Quantua is made from full grain veg tan leather from the Concia Wapier in Italy, and it uses Rita Tiger thread for all the sewing. The cross-stitch pattern across the back is both visually and tactually interesting, and you can see through the stitch holes to the blue backing, which shows how the wallet was sewn.

The wallet uses a multi-layer leather design that is executed well. The burnishing on the edge is quite nice, with just a bit of a sheen to it, and the different colors of the leather layers are visible along the edges, which adds to the overall appeal.

There are a few construction issues worth noting. There are some sewing alignment issues across the top, and the reinforced stitch hole at the bottom right extends too far into the wallet. These are minor but noticeable details that keep the build quality from being perfect.

The owner of JamesLee Design started the company after not finding a suitable solution for a field notes cover with a belt clip, which he needed while working up and down ladders. That need led him to create other leather items, including this wallet.

Card and Cash Capacity

The wallet offers a practical amount of storage for its size. On the exterior, there are two slots: a card slot that is sewn on both sides, and a cash slot that is primarily designed for folded cash. Fold cash once and slip it in.

Inside, there are three more slots. One slot is designed for cards you use frequently, while another has a half-moon cutout that provides easy finger and thumb access. The third slot is more of an archive area for cards you do not use very often.

In testing, the wallet held five cards and five slips of cash folded once. Total capacity is eight cards: six in the interior and up to two in the exterior. The wallet does require some breaking in, which is expected with quality leather materials.

Usability and Everyday Carry

Overall, the usability of this wallet is very easy. The slope designs on the front provide great access for finger and thumb, and the cash peeking above the top edge makes it easy to grab. The interior slope and half-moon cutout also provide good access to cards.

One trick to note is that when inserting cash, it is easier to open the wallet fully rather than trying to slip cash past the lower section. Opening it provides less stress on that side and allows the cash to slide in much more easily.

As with all quality wallets, it will stretch to fit what you carry and begin to shape around the contents and the pocket you carry it in. The patina should look amazing over time, and the wallet fits really well in the palm.

Buying Advice

The pricing for this wallet is $105 as of the time of review. While that might seem high, wallets have gone up in price 30 to 50 percent over the past six plus years, so this is in the same range as comparable products.

The final score for this wallet is 3.6 out of 5, with quality rated at 4, pricing at 3, features at 3, usability at 4, and perception at 3. The handmade quality leather pushes the quality score toward a 5, but the construction issues noted earlier hold it back.

Conclusion

The JamesLee Design Quantua wallet is a well-made handmade leather wallet with a distinctive design and thoughtful card access. It is easy to use, fits well in the hand, and should develop a beautiful patina over time. The minor construction issues are worth considering, but for those who appreciate handmade leather goods, this is a solid option to add to a collection.
