Instinct Trail Running Reflex Belt: A Well-Built Belt With One Sizing Catch

A stretchy banded running belt with six pockets, a pole carrying system and a race bib holder that performed superbly in testing, though it sizes up small.

Introduction

A good running belt should disappear once it is on your waist, and after a few weeks of testing the Instinct Trail Running Reflex Belt has earned a permanent spot in regular running kit. Carrying a phone and a small soft flask of water on nearly every run has never felt less intrusive.

Who This Belt Is For

This belt suits trail runners and racers who want to carry a phone, soft flask, gels and a lightweight jacket without a bulky vest. It is also a strong fit for runners who race with a belt, since it includes a dedicated race bib holder.

Design and Features

The Reflex Belt uses a banded, step-into design made from a stretchy tubular material, with no adjustment built in. It comes in sizes from extra small up to double XL, and it retails in the UK for around £40.

Storage is generous: six pockets run the whole way around the belt. The front and rear each have a double pocket setup with a good-sized internal pocket plus an outer stretchy pocket, and there are smaller segregated pockets on either side, one ideal for a 500ml soft flask. The tubular outer pocket at the back is designed to stow a waterproof or lightweight running jacket, and it doubles as a pole carrying system thanks to substantial rubber grippers inside.

Other thoughtful touches include a race bib holder, large pull tabs on each pocket for easy access on the move, and reflective material on those tabs for better visibility on dark runs. Perforations around the belt help airflow.

How It Performed

The bounce test, run with a fully loaded official kit list of a 500ml soft flask, two gels, a lightweight running jacket, running gloves, a small head torch and a phone, produced very little movement and essentially no bounce. The belt stayed secure even with all that weight inside.

Construction impressed as well. Seams and stitching are neatly finished, the fabric is soft against the skin with no irritation or rubbing, and it is stretchy yet breathable, helped by the tiny perforations around the belt. The tubular pole pocket felt more secure than traditional loop systems, with poles staying put even when moving at speed.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The one real caveat is sizing. The medium tested here is listed for a 78 to 86cm (31 to 34 inch) waist, and at a 32 to 33 inch waist it still felt a little too tight. The belt runs small, and a size up is likely the safer choice. Check the sizing chart and consider going up one size from your measured fit.

Buying Advice

If you want a snug, secure, low-bounce belt for everyday trail runs and races, the Reflex Belt is among the better options available. Size up if you are between sizes or prefer a slightly looser fit for long days out.

Conclusion

The Instinct Trail Running Reflex Belt is a well-constructed, highly functional running belt with smart features, secure storage and excellent stability under load. Aside from sizing up small, it stands comparison with the best running belts tested to date.
