Hercules Ultra Torque HCB85B2 Gen 2 Review: More Power for Less Money
Harbor Freight's updated Ultra Torque cordless impact wrench brings a new brushless motor, stronger high-torque output, and a $189 price with a 5-year warranty.
Introduction
Harbor Freight’s Hercules Ultra Torque has quietly become one of the most interesting cordless high-torque impact wrenches on the market, and the new HCB85B2 Gen 2 (SKU 58887) pushes that story further. At $189 with a 5-year warranty included, it undercuts nearly every serious competitor in the category while delivering output that was unthinkable at this price a couple of years ago.
The Gen 2 looks nearly identical to the original Ultra Torque, which can make it easy to confuse the two on a shelf. The giveaways are a bit more rubber over-molding on the housing and a big “1500 ft-lb” rating printed on the front, versus the 1,400 ft-lb figure on the current Gen 1. Same 9-inch length, and at 6.4 lb bare it is actually 0.2 lb heavier than the tool it replaces.
Who This Impact Wrench Is For
This is a do-it-all high-torque wrench for people who want one cordless tool for automotive work: suspension bolts, axle nuts, rusted hardware, and heavy equipment. Harbor Freight was clearly aiming its sights at the DeWalt DCF900 when designing this platform, and the value equation makes it especially appealing for buyers who want serious torque without stepping up to the price of the big-name brands.

Testing: Working Torque
In the 5-second working torque test in forward, the Gen 2 Hercules lands essentially alongside the Gen 1 Ultra Torque, the Ryobi High Torque, and the DeWalt DCF900. Despite a rating 100 ft-lb higher in both forward and reverse, the Gen 2 produced results within about one foot-pound of the Gen 1 in this test.
That may sound disappointing, but it is worth keeping perspective. If your stuck bolt is in the 300 to 600 ft-lb range, both Hercules models will likely remove it at roughly the same pace.
Reverse Performance: Where the Gen 2 Pulls Ahead
The 10-second reverse test showed the same near-identical picture: around 725 ft-lb versus the Gen 1’s 718, close enough to make you wonder whether this is just the same tool in different clothing. Harbor Freight has a history of two SKUs sharing platforms, so skepticism was fair.

Then the 15-second reverse test changed everything: 812 ft-lb, up from 740. That kind of gain, appearing only at the top end of extended runs, is genuinely unusual. The practical takeaway: you will not need to impact for 10 or 15 seconds to see this benefit. The advantage shows up when a bolt is rusted, welded solid, and demanding everything the tool has near its ceiling. That is exactly when the Gen 2 can do things the Gen 1 cannot.
Inside the Tool: What Actually Changed
Opening it up, the Gen 2 closely resembles its predecessor, which itself was heavily inspired by the Milwaukee M18 Gen 2 layout. The hammer assembly weighs the same at roughly 2 lb 4.5 oz, nearly matching Milwaukee’s 2 lb 4 oz, and the anvil is unchanged. The overall tool is 3.4 oz heavier, and the difference turns out to be the motor.

The Gen 2 uses a next-revision brushless motor, designed about a year later than the previous unit and now specific to the Ultra Torque rather than borrowed from the High Torque. The new motor is nearly 2.2 oz heavier, with more windings, and it is more efficient where it counts: fighting against a essentially stationary anvil at high torque loads. The original Ultra Torque and High Torque shared the same motor, a cost-saving decision; this new version gives the Ultra Torque a motor actually built for the job.
Battery Selection Matters
With Harbor Freight’s 8 Ah 21700-cell high-output pack, the 15-second result climbs from 812 to 831 ft-lb, and the 12 Ah pack pushes it to 841 ft-lb. The DeWalt also gains from a larger battery, but the Hercules benefits noticeably from stepping up beyond the standard pack. With the bigger batteries, the tool feels more lively and balanced, and it now makes a good amount more power than a Gen 2 Milwaukee M18.
What to Consider Before Buying
On the ranking charts, the Gen 2 scores 64.6 points as a function of performance and price, a record for high-torque impacts, with 90.2 ft-lb per inch of length, comfortably above the 90 ft-lb-per-inch threshold considered modern-grade. It delivered 94% of its updated claimed numbers in testing, meaning it over-delivers rather than exaggerates.
The trade-offs are real, though. In standard short tests it performs almost identically to the Gen 1, so if you already own the original, there is little reason to upgrade. And while it is not yet beating the DeWalt DCF900 or Milwaukee’s newest Gen 3, those tools cost considerably more. Vibration handling feels reasonable but not exceptional, rated 7 out of 10 on our scale with a standard battery, improving slightly with the 8 or 12 Ah packs.

Buying Advice
If you are buying just one impact wrench to do it all, and performance-to-price matters, the Hercules Ultra Torque Gen 2 is very hard to argue with. At $189 with a 5-year over-the-counter warranty, it is now cheaper than the Gen 1 (recently reduced to $299) and cheaper than every other serious cordless high-torque competitor, with the $199 Ryobi High Torque being the only other close option.
The bigger story is direction: while other brands push prices upward, Harbor Freight lowered this one. The Gen 1 proved surprisingly hard to kill, and with a new dedicated motor and unchanged durability-first construction, this one looks built to hold up the same way.
Conclusion
The Hercules Ultra Torque HCB85B2 Gen 2 is not a revolution on paper. It is the tool the original should arguably have been from day one: same size, same hammer assembly, but with a motor designed for the hardest jobs. For buyers who occasionally face truly stuck, rusted hardware and want maximum torque ceiling per dollar, it currently offers some of the best value in the cordless high-torque category.
