Hasley Goods Gilly Bay Slim Wallet Review: Handmade Minimalism at a Fair Price
A vertical minimalist wallet in full grain vegetable tanned Badalassi Carlo leather, with a tuck closure, quick access pocket, and a $40 base price.
Introduction
The Gilly Bay Slim Wallet from Hasley Goods is a vertical style minimalist wallet with a top flap and tuck closure, designed for either front pocket or back pocket carry. It is made from full grain vegetable tanned waxed Badalassi Carlo leather, and everything about it is made by hand, from the saddle stitching to the rivets. At a base price of $40, it aims to deliver genuine handmade leather quality in a slim, everyday package.
This review covers the design, build quality, and real-world functionality after carrying it for about a week.
Design and Layout
The Gilly Bay Slim follows a very familiar formula: a vertical minimalist body, a top flap with a tuck closure, and a quick access pocket on the back. Hasley Goods has taken that classic layout and adjusted it just enough to make it their own.
The unit shown here is in a dark tobacco color, and the Badalassi Carlo leather has a lovely grain and texturing, especially in this waxed finish. Branding is kept to a single logo stamp in the lower left corner, which keeps the overall look clean.

The unit measures 2.95 by 3.95 inches, the leather comes in at 1.4 mm (a 3.5 oz weight), and the whole wallet weighs just 50 grams, or 1.8 ounces. If you prefer a slimmer profile in the pocket, a 3.5 oz leather is a sensible choice; fans of more substantial 4 to 5 oz leather may find it a touch light, but that is largely subjective.
The wallet is also available in other leather styles such as Pueblo and Buttero, and in a few different colors.
Craftsmanship and Build Quality
This is where the Gilly Bay Slim earns its keep. Everything is made by hand in Indonesia: the stitching is a hand saddle stitch, and the two rivets are hand set. The sample shown here has antique brass rivets, which pair beautifully with the tobacco leather, but gold, silver, and black nickel hardware are also available.
Stitching is deliberately minimal, with two small stitch points, one on the side and one inside at the bottom of the wallet. All the cuts look straight, the lines are clean, and the edges are nicely burnished and polished. Notably, the inside of the wallet gets the same care as the outside, which speaks to the craftsmanship.

The leather choice is excellent for the price, and with proper care it should last a lifetime. It also carries that classic leather smell, which is always a good sign. As a final touch, the quality of the finishing gets an easy thumbs up.
Functionality: Cards and Cash
In total, the wallet holds between eight and ten credit cards depending on card thickness, spread across three pockets:
- Main credit card pocket for the bulk of your cards, with a fairly large cutout so you can grab cards easily, either fanning them out or pulling the whole stack.
- Cash compartment behind the main pocket that accepts unfolded bills, or folded bills with side access.
- Quick access card pocket on the back with a slight slant, giving plenty of surface area to grab your most used card. It can technically hold more than one, but a single card is where it works best.

In testing, eight unfolded American dollar bills plus eight credit cards fit comfortably. Most international currencies will fit as long as they are about the size of a dollar bill or smaller.
For cash carriers, the standout feature is the side-access bill pluck: with the wallet closed, a small squeeze lets you pull all your bills out at once without opening the flap. That is a dream feature if you carry cash regularly.
The wallet was also stress tested with 20 dollar bills folded in half, and while they do fit, the fit is snug and the tuck closure area is not entirely happy with that load. Unfolded, around 15 to 17 bills is a safer limit. Since leather stretches over time, a well broken-in wallet may handle a bit more.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The Gilly Bay Slim is a slim, compact minimalist wallet, and that shape means limits. If you routinely carry more than about eight cards or a thick stack of cash, you may find it tight, especially when new.
Also note that the $40 figure is the base price of the wallet itself. It is made in Indonesia, so shipping charges will add to the total, and you should expect to pay a bit more than $40 all in. Even so, the base price is genuinely impressive for a handmade wallet in Badalassi Carlo leather.

Buying Advice
If you carry a modest stack of cards, some emergency cash, and appreciate handcrafted leather, this wallet fits that brief very well. The quick access back pocket suits people who tap one card constantly, and the side-access cash pluck is a genuine convenience for anyone who still carries bills.
If you prefer thicker, more substantial leather or need to haul a large amount of cash unfolded, look at options with heavier leather or a bigger cash compartment instead.
Conclusion
The craftsmanship is top notch, the design is familiar but well executed, and the functionality covers the everyday essentials without fuss. Hand saddle stitching, hand set rivets, nicely burnished edges, and a handsome waxed tobacco leather make the Gilly Bay Slim feel like a wallet that should cost more than it does. With a $40 base price and only shipping costs to add, it earns a clear thumbs up for anyone shopping for a slim handmade leather wallet.
