Harbor Freight Under $20 Sale: What to Buy and What to Skip

A practical rundown of the best tools to grab during the 30% off under-$20 Inside Track sale, plus the ones worth passing on.

Introduction

Harbor Freight is running a 30% off sale for Inside Track members on items priced under $20, and it is a good weekend to fill gaps in a tool collection. Plenty of the store’s best-value hand tools still land at the $19.99 mark, which puts them at about $14 after the discount. Not everything under $20 deserves the money, though, and a handful of longtime favorites have quietly crept above the cutoff. Here is what is worth buying, what deserves a second thought, and what to skip.

How the Sale Works

The discount applies to Inside Track members on items listed at $20 or less, and it runs through the weekend. Note that Harbor Freight has raised prices on several products that used to sit comfortably under the cutoff, so some tools that were automatic buys in past sales no longer qualify. Items that used to be $19.99 but now list at $22, such as the Icon long reach pistol grip pliers, the Icon hammer, the Icon diagonal cutters, the Icon three-position slip joint pliers, and the Icon hex wrenches, are all out of the running this time.

Icon 8in Needle Nose Pliers

At $20 list and $14 on sale, these pliers are modeled closely on a well-known professional design, and they hold up well next to the original. They are genuinely good pliers for the price, and they are a clear buy if you need a solid pair for general gripping and detail work.

Icon S-Jaw Quick Adjust Pliers

These Swedish-style quick adjust pliers have only had light use, but they have already proved handy for suspension work, adjustments, and larger parts where a firm lock on the workpiece matters. They clamp on tight, and at $20 list, $14 on sale, they earn a buy.

Icon Hose Grip Pliers

These work well and follow a proven professional design. Beyond hose work, they also double as effective electrical disconnect pliers when you need to press a push tab down on a stubborn electrical connector. Dedicated disconnect pliers exist for that job, but these handle it fairly well. A buy at $20 list, $14 on sale.

Icon 3/8in Torx Bit

There is no need to own the full set when other Torx bits are already on hand, but Icon sockets and bits are typically very high quality. At $20 list and $14 on sale, this bit is a buy for anyone short on a quality 3/8in drive Torx option.

Knipex Parrot Grip Pliers

The Knipex version of the parrot grip pliers still qualifies at $19.99, and the Icon version at $14 on sale is a very similar tool and a solid deal. Both are worth owning; the Knipex edges out the Icon in feel, but either one is a buy this weekend.

What to Skip: Channel Adjustable Pliers

Since the Knipex Cobras and Knipex Plier Wrenches entered the picture, traditional channel adjustable pliers rarely get picked up anymore. Even at the right $19.99 price point, this one is a skip. The same goes for the Icon scraper: a razor blade scraper of that style does not justify the Icon label, and the Icon picks are likewise a skip in favor of the Tekton set below.

Quinn Low Profile Ratchet

Quinn is a mixed bag, but the low profile ratchets are made in Taiwan and genuinely nice, comparable to the well-regarded 90-tooth style ratchets from other brands. At $19 list, about $14 after the discount, that is a strong deal. One catch: the non-comfort grip version shown here only comes in the 3/8in master socket set, and the 1/4in and 3/8in comfort grip versions bought separately can push above the sale cutoff.

Quinn 1/2in Deep Socket Set

The Quinn deep chrome sockets are well made and have held up nicely in use. Anyone needing a set of 1/2in drive deep chrome sockets should not hesitate: $19 list, roughly $14 on sale, is an easy call. The Quinn screwdrivers, including the diamond tip sets and the precision screwdrivers, are also okay at their low price points, though they are not the best available.

Tekton Pick Set

This five-piece pick set is made in the USA with better shafts and better handles than the Icon equivalent, and it is preferred by a wide margin. List price is under $25, and it is a genuinely nice set even at full price. Skip the Icon picks and go straight to this one.

Icon 10mm Socket Set

For anyone who loses 10mm sockets, or just wants spares, the four-piece Icon 10mm socket set is a cheap insurance policy. The Pittsburgh version was even less than $10 on sale before the Icon arrived, so at $20 list, $14 on sale, it is still a reasonable pickup. Go for it.

Icon Socket Adapters

This four-piece adapter set lists at $17, which drops to a little over $10 after the discount. These were freebies with any purchase not long ago, so plenty of people already have several sets. For those who missed that promotion and are unlikely to see it return, they are high quality and work very well in use. A buy if the set is missing from the drawer.

Quinn Flare Nut Wrenches: Consider the Alternative

The Quinn flare nut wrenches were previously flagged as a possible buy, but negative impressions of the Quinn flare nut design changed that call. The alternative is the Proto five-piece set, made in the USA and considered, alongside the professional flagship brand, to be among the best flare nut wrenches available. They cost considerably more, roughly $110 for the five-piece set when a good deal is found. If use will be infrequent and bolt damage is not a worry, the Quinn set may be worth a try, but for now it is a skip and the money is better saved for the Proto.

US General Service Cart and Icon Magnetic Mats

Outside the under-$20 sale, the US General service cart remains on sale through the end of the year for $500, and it is one of the best tool carts the store offers. It has held up well over time, sits close to the quality level of the Icon triple stack, and matches the quality of considerably more expensive professional-brand carts. A second one is already planned. The Icon magnetic mats, meanwhile, were originally $20 and dropped to $15 during a past sale, but now list at $25 and no longer qualify. They are frequently out of stock, though some stores have them back. Despite the higher price, they are great for holding parts or tools during any car work and remain a definite buy.

Conclusion

The standout buys this weekend are the Icon needle nose, S-jaw quick adjust, and hose grip pliers at $14 each, the Tekton pick set for anyone upgrading from cheaper picks, the Quinn low profile ratchet and deep socket sets, and the magnetic mats despite the price bump. The Knipex parrot grip pliers still squeak under the cutoff for those who want the premium version. Skip the channel adjustable pliers, the Icon picks and scraper, and think twice before grabbing the Quinn flare nut wrenches over a Proto set. Fill the gaps that actually exist in the toolbox, and this sale pays for itself quickly.
