Harbor Freight Icon 4-Piece Scraper and Pick Set Review: A Budget-Friendly Snap-on Alternative

A $25 scraper and pick set that gets surprisingly close to premium tool standards, with one design idea the big brands still do not offer.

Introduction

Scraper and pick sets are some of the most-used tools in any garage drawer, and they are also one of the easiest places to overspend. This four-piece set from Harbor Freight’s Icon line tries to thread that needle. It currently sells for $25 at full retail, down from $30, a price point that was finally low enough to be worth a serious look. The set covers three picks and a scraper, and it leans on a scraper design that has long been a favorite among premium tool buyers, at a fraction of what the comparable professional set would cost.

Who This Set Is For

This set makes sense for anyone who routinely works on gaskets, seals, O-rings, hoses, or tight mechanical fittings. It is aimed squarely at people who would otherwise reach for a premium professional-grade set but do not want the price that comes with it. DIY mechanics and farm-shop users alike will find familiar work here, since the included hook styles mirror what long-time professional tool users keep within arm’s reach.

Main Strengths

The standout piece is the flat scraper. Its design is clearly inspired by a well-known professional scraper that has since been discontinued, and it gets very close: the handle fit is comfortable, with a good amount of soft grip and a small thumb ramp, and the short shaft with a U-shaped profile feels right in the hand. The blade itself is solidly made.

The set also includes a standard ball-style ice pick that performs perfectly well, plus a couple of hook variations that widen its range. One of those variations is genuinely interesting: a stubby hose pick style that the major premium brands, to general knowledge, do not currently produce. Long hose picks are common, but this short version is useful in all kinds of situations and is one of the more original ideas in the set.

Things to Consider Before Buying

There are a few small design compromises to know about. The scraper blade has a burr on the end out of the box, though touching these up is standard practice with any scraper. More notable is a ramp on the blade edge where the flat profile is interrupted, so instead of running smoothly along a surface the way the premium original does, the blade can catch on that edge. The premium design keeps the line flat and continuous all the way down.

The handle has a similar quirk. A significant portion of the grip is smooth, hard plastic, and in a natural hold three to four fingers can end up resting on that slick section rather than on the soft grip, which costs some traction. On the premium original, the grip stays useful further along the handle. Neither issue is fatal, but together they are the difference between a good set and a great one.

The bent pick in the set is also a mirror image of the classic favorite style, bending toward the outside rather than the inside of a natural grip. Right-handed users may need to adjust their technique, though left-handed users might actually prefer this orientation.

Buying Advice

At $25, this set is easy to recommend for anyone who wants premium-inspired scraper and pick function without the premium price. If you rely on a scraper daily and care about flawless blade geometry and full-length grip traction, the small compromises above matter more, and a higher-end alternative may still be worth the wait. But the stubby hose pick alone is a design the big brands have not matched, and the rest of the set is good enough that most buyers will not mind.

Conclusion

This Icon set proves that budget tools can borrow the best ideas from professional-grade equipment and execute them well, with only a few small shortcuts along the way. For occasional users and value-focused buyers, it is a strong pick in both senses of the word.
