Powder-coated stainless steel, such as on water bottles, engraves cleanly by removing the coating without cutting too deep into the metal underneath. Black-coated aluminum business cards produce excellent grayscale results, which is a fun application for custom cards or promotional items. Slate also engraves well, with multiple passes creating visible depth of around three-quarters of a millimeter.

Rotary Fixtures for Cylindrical Objects

The G2 Pro works with two types of rotary fixtures. The chuck-style fixture uses different pins to accommodate a range of diameters, making it suitable for rings and smaller cylindrical items. It is not the heaviest-duty fixture available, but it handled a black oxide coated impact socket without problems, producing an engrave similar to high-visibility sockets sold in stores.

The roller-style fixture is designed for larger items like water bottles and sockets. One of the key advantages is that the speed settings do not change regardless of the diameter of the workpiece. The fixture splits the engraving into segments, and you can adjust the segment width to balance speed against visual quality.

One of the more unique features of the G2 Pro is the ability to use it as a handheld engraver. There are two ways to do this. You can remove the fixture plate from the base and hold the laser head directly over the workpiece, engraving through the middle of the unit. Alternatively, you can remove the laser head entirely and mount it into the included handheld shield, then hold the shield against the surface you want to engrave.

One minor issue with the handheld setup is the fume extraction hose. On the original G2, the hose plugged directly into the laser head. With the new single-cable design, there is no port on the head for the hose, so it must plug into the main unit instead. The included cord is fairly short for this purpose, though a USB extension cord can solve the problem since it is a standard USB connection. It is a small oversight in an otherwise well-designed update.
