Gulu A7 Jump Starter Review: A Jump Starter and Air Compressor That Actually Does Both

An 88.8Wh jump starter with a 160 PSI compressor that proved itself on a real mountain roadside repair.

Introduction

Combination jump starter and air compressor units have been around for a while, but many of them trade capability for size. The Gulu A7 takes the opposite approach: it is bigger than most, and that extra bulk buys real functionality. After carrying it as the only roadside tool on a mountain trip where it actually earned its keep, it has earned a permanent spot in the vehicle.

What the Gulu A7 Offers

The A7 packs an 88.8 watt-hour battery, which is enough capacity to jump a vehicle and still have power left over to top off a tire afterward. That matters because smaller combined units often force you to choose between the two jobs, and older designs tend to overheat and underperform.

On the starting side, the A7 delivers 800 peak amps, with a peak current figure of 6,000. It uses USB-C for both input and output, plus a 5-volt USB-A output for charging other devices. The compressor side runs from 4 to 160 PSI, with 350 litres per minute of airflow for inflation and 70 litres per minute for deflation. It handles both inflate and deflate from the same port, which is handy for airing down and back up.

The display is bright and mode-driven: presets for SUV, car, bike, and ball, each in PSI, plus a free-form mode in PSI or kilopascals. The modes narrow the pressure range so you are less likely to overinflate, and they cut down on button-pushing to hit your target pressure.

Operation and Accessories

The unit comes with a high-pressure hose that screws in with a standard brass connector, so any other hoses you already own should work with it. A bag of smaller inflator tips is included too: Schrader converters, ball needles, and the like. One honest critique: the small fitting that ties the hose to the inflator and deflator ports is easy to lose, and losing it means improvising. A few more spare attachments in the box would go a long way.

The jumper cables are solid and generously sized, with a boost function for severely discharged batteries. Charging happens over USB-C, and a light button on the control panel toggles the built-in area light, which also does strobe and SOS modes.

Since the jumper cables are fairly short and batteries have a habit of dying at night, the placement of that light on the working side of the unit is a genuinely thoughtful touch.

Using It in the Field

The A7 got a real test on a hunting trip in the mountains. A trailer tire went flat, the flat was swapped out, and the spare was left for the trip back to town. The valve stem, cracked from being smacked on rocks, turned out to be the culprit. The A7 inflated the tire well enough to make a 60-mile run to a shop that replaced the valve stem. The unit was carried as the only tool, and it worked when it was actually needed.

Noise-wise, the compressor has some volume to it, as they all do, but the housing appears well sealed against dust. The main concern is keeping the air intake clear if the unit vibrates on loose ground and stirs up dust.

Everyday Practicality

This is the kind of tool that stops being an emergency-only gadget. Topping off a tire, inflating something around the house, or jumping a friend’s car on a cold night are all ordinary jobs it handles. The larger capacity means you do not have to ration the charge, wondering whether jumping one battery will leave enough power to inflate a tire afterward.

For serious overlanding use, a dedicated larger inflator still makes sense for bigger tires and repeated airing up and down for traction. But as a single do-everything unit, the A7 is genuinely impressive.

Should You Buy the Gulu A7?

Gulu sells the A7 standalone or bundled with its deep-scan OBD2 reader, and the bundle is a sensible pairing for a battery and compressor kit. The general direction of these devices is converging: portable power banks, jump starters, and compressors are merging into one box that does everything well. The A7 is currently a strong example of exactly that.

Conclusion

The Gulu A7 is a bigger combined jump starter and compressor that backs its size with real capability: 88.8 watt-hours, 800 peak amps, a 4 to 160 PSI compressor with inflate and deflate, and a usable built-in light. If you want one unit that can jump a car and top off a tire without compromising either job, it is an easy recommendation.
