After spending time with this dock, it stands out as one of the most polished eGPU solutions available, even if it comes with a few trade-offs worth considering.

What Is the GPD G2?

The GPD G2 is an eGPU dock designed to connect to a laptop, mini PC, or handheld to boost graphical performance using a discrete desktop graphics card. Unlike the earlier GPD G1, which packed a laptop GPU inside a single compact unit, the G2 is built around the idea of bringing your own GPU. This means you can choose the graphics card that fits your needs and upgrade it over time as newer models arrive.

The dock itself features an aluminum shell with a subtle purple tint, matching the design language of the G1. It includes an 800-watt power supply that is gold rated, capable of powering graphics cards all the way up to an RTX 5090. The power supply also delivers 100 watts through its USB-C port, making it a single-cable solution for handhelds or laptops that can charge via USB.

Design and Build Quality

One of the first things you notice about the GPD G2 is how sturdy it feels. The metal brackets and aluminum shell hold the graphics card firmly in place, giving the impression that the GPU is seated inside a proper motherboard rather than an external enclosure. There is no wobble, and the setup feels balanced with no additional weight on any edge.

The installation process is refreshingly simple. You remove a single screw, line up the PCIe slot, and push the graphics card into place. A thumb screw then tightens everything down. There are concerns about its longevity, so it is best to treat it as a semi-permanent connection rather than something you swap regularly. For USB connections, the dock is more hot-swappable, though powering everything down before connecting is still the safer approach.

The dock also features an M.2 NVMe slot, allowing you to expand storage every time you connect it to a computer or handheld. This effectively turns the dock into a storage expansion hub as well as a graphics booster.

Performance Testing

To understand the performance gains, the G2 was tested with a mini PC featuring an Intel Panther Lake chip and integrated B390 graphics. On its own, this mini PC scored 7,197 in 3DMark Time Spy, which is impressive for integrated graphics. When connected to the G2 with an RTX 5070, the score jumped to 19,043, a 164.6% increase.

Real-world gaming results followed a similar pattern. In Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight, the mini PC managed around 70 frames per second at 1440p medium settings with XESS quality. Adding the eGPU allowed for 4K medium settings with DLSS quality at roughly 75 frames per second. In Pragmata, the integrated graphics delivered about 50 frames per second at 1080p medium, while the eGPU setup reached around 80 frames per second at 1440p medium with no upscaling. Doom Eternal saw a jump from 1080p medium at about 58 frames per second to 1440p high with DLSS quality at roughly 70 frames per second. Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 1440p medium with XESS quality at about 70 frames per second on integrated graphics, and the eGPU allowed for 1440p high settings with no upscaling at around 80 frames per second.

Testing with a handheld device, such as the Xbox LAX, showed even more dramatic gains. The handheld scored 3,935 in Time Spy on its own, but jumped to 12,929 when connected to the G2 with the RTX 5070, a 228.6% increase. In Cyberpunk 2077, the handheld managed about 55 frames per second at 1080p low settings, while the eGPU setup delivered 4K medium settings with DLSS quality at a locked 60 frames per second, or about 75 frames per second unlocked.

These results highlight where the G2 shines. Devices with weaker integrated graphics see the biggest improvements, making the dock an excellent option for older handhelds, laptops, or mini PCs with USB 4 connectivity.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The GPD G2 is not a budget purchase. At around $400 during pre-order and roughly $475 at retail, it costs more than many competing eGPU docks. For comparison, the Aostar AG03, another popular option, comes in at about $280. The G2 offers a sturdier build and cleaner cabling, but the Aostar supports three 8-pin power connectors out of the box, which is useful for certain graphics cards.

The MCIO connectivity standard is also something of an unknown. As the first eGPU to use it, there is no guarantee that future devices will adopt it. USB 4 version 2 is similarly new, with few handhelds or mini PCs currently supporting it. This means the G2 feels a little ahead of its time, though that also makes it something of an investment for the future.

Another consideration is the cable situation. The dock includes a cable with two 8-pin connectors, but some graphics cards require three. While GPD has indicated that similar GPUs with three connectors have worked with the included cable, there are cases where it does not. Finding a suitable male-to-male adapter can be difficult, and the available options are often longer than needed.

Finally, the power supply fan noise may be a dealbreaker for those seeking a quiet setup. It is louder than the Aostar AG03 but still quieter than a full desktop PC, so your tolerance will play a role in whether this is an issue.

The GPD G2 makes the most sense for people with older hardware who want to extend its life without building a new PC. If you have a laptop, handheld, or mini PC with USB 4 connectivity, the G2 can deliver a significant performance boost, especially in games. The ability to bring your own GPU and upgrade it over time adds to the long-term value.

For those with a device that supports USB 4 version 2 or Thunderbolt 5, the G2 offers even better bandwidth and performance. As more devices adopt these standards, the dock is likely to become even more capable. In that sense, it feels like a future-proof investment.

That said, if you are on a tighter budget or need three 8-pin power connectors for your graphics card, the Aostar AG03 might be a more practical choice. It is cheaper and supports those connectors out of the box, though it does not feel as sturdy or clean as the G2.
