Flex Sub-Compact 1/2-inch Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Review: Compact Power, Smart Control
A close look at Flex's new Sub-Compact 1/2-inch mid-torque impact wrench, with 750 ft-lbs of torque, two auto control modes, and a kit configuration worth understanding before you buy.
Introduction
Flex has been expanding its Sub-Compact line, and the newest 1/2-inch mid-torque impact wrench is arguably the most anticipated addition of the bunch. Spotted in-store at Lowe’s Home Improvement, this compact wrench promises a compelling mix of power and portability, with Flex claiming 750 ft-lbs of torque alongside 20 percent more power, 25 percent longer run time, and 50 percent faster charging than previous technology. In this review we take a full look at the kit, the specs, and how the tool actually behaves driving fasteners and breaking loose lug nuts.

What’s in the Box
The kit arrives as the full package: the impact wrench itself, a charger, a 5 amp hour battery, and a bag. The battery is built on Flex’s cylindrical 18650 cell platform rather than their newest battery technology, but it is described as a high quality, robust pack made with carefully selected cells.
One standout detail of the kit is the charger. Flex includes a rapid charger as standard, and it is fan cooled: when the battery is seated, aligned vents on the charger and pack allow cool air to pass over the cells, bringing the pack down to a temperature where it can safely accept a charge. This matters because rapid charging itself is not what damages lithium ion cells; high temperatures are. The fan-assisted thermal management is designed to address exactly that.
Design and Build Details
The front portion of the tool appears to be painted metal with nicely rounded edges, which should make it feel non-marring against finished surfaces. A dedicated protective boot for this model was not evident in the kit, so that is worth checking if you want extra coverage.

The anvil design has a clever twist: it appears Flex has spread the costs somewhat so the same anvil can be used in either a hog ring style configuration or a pin detent version. The kit unit uses the hog ring style, and sockets pull off the tool easily while still seating securely.
Speed selection is handled through three modes. Speed 1 runs from 0 to 450 RPM for controlled, precise driving, Speed 2 reaches 1,600 RPM, and Speed 3 tops out at 2,700 RPM with an impact rate of up to 3,100 impacts per minute. The tool measures 6.3 inches in length and weighs 4.2 pounds as a bare tool, keeping it genuinely compact for a mid-torque wrench.
Real-World Driving Performance
Starting with smaller fasteners on Speed 3, the wrench handled the task as a one-handed operation and felt largely free of vibration. There is visible vibration-dampening technology at work here too: looking closely at the handle while the tool runs, you can see the material at the handle flexing relative to the head, absorbing some of the shake before it reaches your hand.

Stepping through Speed 1 to Speed 3 shows a clear progression in drive character. Speed 1 delivers a much more controlled, deliberate drive, while Speed 3 powers fasteners home with no problem at all. Half-inch lag fasteners, which are by no means the largest fasteners around, went in without hesitation, and for a compact tool the power delivery felt generous.
Auto Modes and Lug Nut Testing
The tool includes two auto control modes selected from a single switch. Auto Stop mode is intended to prevent over-tightening, braking, or stripping, while bolt removal mode stops the tool once the bolt is loosened. The switch works in either direction depending on whether you are driving forward or in reverse.
Backing out lag fasteners in wood is not the strongest application for auto mode, since the tool can shut off before the bolt is fully out. In machine screw style applications and lug nut work, however, it behaves much more predictably. Running lug nuts down in forward with auto engaged, the wrench stopped once it sensed resistance, leaving the fastener seated without over-torquing.

In reverse on lug nuts torqued to 154 ft-lbs, the wrench broke each nut loose but stopped instead of spinning it completely off the stud, so the lug nut did not go flying. One caution from testing: after the auto stop engaged and a rough two-count on a lower speed, rechecking with a torque wrench showed the nuts had been over-torqued. The lesson is to rely on a proper final torque with a torque wrench rather than trusting the tool’s stopping point as a calibrated value.
Buying Advice
Flex backs this wrench with a five year warranty, and there is currently a stronger offer on the table: buy any Flex tool or kit and register it before the end of the year, and the five year warranty is upgraded to the Founders Warranty, a lifetime warranty covering the tool, batteries, and chargers. That makes buying into the platform now noticeably more attractive.
Flex has also launched its own line of impact accessories, so going all-in on matching Flex sockets is an option, though any impact sockets will work with the tool. If you want a compact, powerful mid-torque wrench and you value the auto control modes for assembly-style work, this kit is an easy recommendation. If you primarily back long fasteners out of wood, test the auto mode behavior against your own use case first.
Conclusion
The Flex Sub-Compact 1/2-inch mid-torque impact wrench delivers on the promise of compact power: 750 ft-lbs of claimed torque in a 6.3 inch, 4.2 pound bare tool, with thoughtful touches like a fan-cooled rapid charger, a dual-compatible anvil design, and vibration-dampening at the handle. The auto modes are genuinely useful for driving and lug nut removal, provided you finish critical fasteners with a torque wrench. With the Founders Warranty available for a limited time, this is a good moment to pick up the kit.
