Exceed Designs Tyrant Razor V3 Review: A Premium Utility Knife Worth the Upgrade

A closer look at the Tyrant Razor V3, including new carbon fiber scales, a square pivot, and the changes Exceed Designs made since earlier versions.

Compact titanium folding utility knife with carbon fiber scales, open with blade exposed

Introduction

The Exceed Designs Tyrant Razor V3 is the third iteration of a small but genuinely interesting product: a folding utility knife built like a premium pocket knife. This version arrived with a set of new carbon fiber scales, and after spending time with it straight out of the box, there is a lot to like about where the design has landed.

What the Tyrant Razor V3 Is

The Tyrant Razor is surprisingly small. The total length is only about three and a half inches, yet once you flip it open with the flipper tab, you get far more hand space than a standard folding knife of this size, and more than many other utility knives too. Compared with something like the Gerber EAB, it offers quite a bit more exposed cutting edge, so you can do more real work with it.

Blade changes are simple once you know the trick: pressing the titanium flexes it slightly, letting you pull the blade out. The knife ships with a Lark’s-style premium blade seated in a snug holder that will not shift in use. Some users note that heavy sideways stress could pop a blade out, but cutting in a normal direction should not give you trouble. The blade rides on bearings, so the action is excellent even with zero break-in. One quirk worth knowing: a small rubber residue mark was visible out of the box, which wiped away and was not a scratch.

Scales, Finishes, and Everyday Feel

The review unit came with milled carbon fiber scales in a nice machining pattern. Plain carbon fiber can be slippery without texturing, but this milling pattern fixes that: it looks good and feels secure in hand. The frame itself is a stonewashed titanium frame lock with a steel lock bar insert, an over-travel stop, and bearing action. A skiff bearing version may be offered on the Exceed Designs website at some point, but it was not available yet.

A shorter angled pocket clip was also included, and its angle looks like an improvement worth trying.

The TSA Question

The V3 is marketed as TSA friendly when carried without a blade, and technically that is correct: the TSA website lists bladeless utility knife handles as legal. The practical caveat is that recent internal memos have reportedly instructed agents not to allow utility knife handles through checkpoints even without blades. Anyone who flies regularly knows enforcement can be inconsistent, so treat the “TSA friendly” claim as technically true but not guaranteed in practice.

Why a Utility Blade Beats a Regular Folder for Dirty Work

This is where the Tyrant Razor earns its place. Plenty of people are happy to spend on knives but do not want to abuse expensive blades on rough tasks. Utility blades take abuse you would never subject a fine folder to, especially at the tip, and when they dull you flip the blade around or simply replace it. Cutting cardboard on concrete with an expensive knife is not happening; with this, it is a non-issue.

The thin utility blade also slices better than a typical thick folder for many tasks, something no conventional folding knife can match. The trade-off is deliberate: this is a premium piece, and the price has climbed from roughly $60 to around $80. For a tool that covers a niche not really met elsewhere, that still reads as fair value.

What Comes in the Box

The kit is generous. You get a replacement lock bar insert, a spare lanyard hardware option that converts the rear into a small pry tool, spare standard blades, and a spare pivot. The pry tool conversion is a neat idea, though it sticks up a bit much for some tastes and sacrifices the smooth comfort of the stock profile.

The V3 also moves to a square pivot, which self-locates in a cutout in the carbon fiber scales, a smart touch that keeps everything aligned. The included blade is a premium Japanese-style option that tests among the top performers for edge retention, and spares are widely available.

Buying Advice

If you want a beautiful titanium EDC piece that still shrugs off the ugly jobs, the Tyrant Razor V3 fills a gap that ordinary folders cannot. Buy it if you value a replaceable blade, a big-feeling grip in a tiny package, and premium fit and finish. Skip it if you mostly need heavy-duty cutting every day or want the cheapest possible utility knife; at around $80, this is a connoisseur’s take on the category, and it is assembled in the United States from parts made overseas.

Conclusion

The V3 refines an already clever concept: better scales, a self-locating square pivot, a promising new clip, and the same excellent bearing action. It is premium in both feel and price, but for anyone who wants elegance and utility in one pocket, the Exceed Designs Tyrant Razor V3 delivers something genuinely hard to find elsewhere.
