The Evolution S14MCS is the latest mitering chopsaw from Evolution, and it brings a full set of new Evoax features to the table. The headline additions include a shadow line for precise cut placement, an intelligent motor that optimizes blade speed, and a new ceram carbide Evoax blade that has been independently tested to make over 3,500 cuts through 4-inch steel tubing. The saw head pivots rather than the fence, which means your material always stays facing the same direction no matter what angle you are cutting at. This review takes a practical look at cut quality, the mitering function, clamping, and the new blade and motor technology.

Cut Quality and Performance

The S14MCS handles heavy material with ease. Cutting through 1/2-inch thick flat bar, the saw ate through quickly. The cut was cool to the touch as soon as it was done, and there was basically no burr on the edge. This is a clear contrast to an abrasive saw, which would take about four times as long, leave the material hot, and produce a large burr that needs cleanup. The cold cut technology is the main advantage here.

Moving to thinner-walled square tubing, the saw also performed well. A miter cut was made with a one-handed adjustment for the angle. The cut was cool to the touch immediately, and the cut quality was again very nice. On the back edge, there was a tiny little burr, but in most cases you would not need to remove it. If you did, it would be very fast to do.

Mitering Function and Pivoting Head

The mitering function on the S14MCS is a key differentiator compared to a traditional chopsaw. With a regular chopsaw, the head is always sitting straight and the fence itself moves, usually only in one direction. This means that with a long piece of material, either the material has to swing way out across the room or you have to rotate the saw to keep the material straight. With the S14MCS, the material is always going straight. This is especially useful in a long, skinny workspace. You can simply loosen the lock, pivot the saw head, and then go back straight whenever you need to.

The base has degree markings and can move 46 degrees in either direction. A knob locks in your angle, and there are stops at common angles like 0 degrees square, 45 degrees, 30 degrees, and 22 1/2 degrees, so you can easily get those tightened in and locked down. The ability to miter in both directions is especially helpful when making frames or miter cuts out of angle material. With square tubing, you could flip the tubing over to make the opposite angle cut. However, with angled material, it is difficult to fixture it safely in a traditional chopsaw. With the S14MCS, you can pivot the head the other way and make the opposite angled cut. The cut is cool to the touch, has a nice smooth surface, and not much burr.

Another adjustment that is easy to make is the position of the blade front to back. This allows you to hit the right part of your material and make it all the way through on miter cuts. You simply loosen a knob, pull the blade out, and it locks into one of three places.

Shadow Line for Accurate Cuts

The shadow line is a standout feature. It shows exactly where the blade is going to cut before you make the cut. Without this feature, you would have to pull the blade clear down to the stock, and it can be difficult to see exactly where the cut is going to be. To use the shadow line, you pull the handle slightly, and it hits a stop before the motor engages. The light turns on, revealing the shadow line, and you can slide to line up your mark exactly without having to bring the blade all the way down. The shadow line does not need to be calibrated like a laser might, because it is shining directly past the blade. It is always going to be accurate.

Clamping and Fence Design

The clamping mechanisms are well thought out. Everything clamps against the back fences. There are two sliding clamps to hold material back against the fence, and they both ride on a heavy-duty rail. The height of this rail can be adjusted and locked into place to accommodate different sizes of material. These are quick-release clamps, so you can drop them down, slide them up, and tighten right away. To remove material, you loosen the clamp, flip it back, and move it out of the way. There is also one vertical clamp, also quick-release style, with five different positions that bind in place. You can position it wherever you need it or remove it entirely.

The fence has been reinforced on this version of the mitering chopsaw. Additional ribbing has been added to increase stiffness so the fence cannot deflect or bend. A steel bar runs all the way through the length of the fence to keep it from flexing out by the blade. Three V-blocks are included to install on all of the different clamps for holding round stock, or they can be used to position square stock up at a 45-degree angle, which is actually a little bit easier on your blade for straight cuts.

Evoax Blade and Intelligent Motor

The intelligent motor is another update with this latest version. It monitors the blade speed throughout your cut to make sure it is at the optimal speed for blade life, depending on how hard you are cutting. This can extend the life of just about any blade by around 30 percent. The intelligent motor also has a soft start, which prevents a spike in the current out of your circuit and prevents you from tripping your circuit breaker. It also has a blade brake that brings the speed down more slowly. You can hear the gradual start and then the faster stop.

The blade that comes on this latest version has been upgraded to the top-of-the-line Evoax blade. This is a ceram carbide tooth blade rather than tungsten carbide. It is made in Japan and optimized for low vibration and long blade life. An independent lab tested the blade and found they were able to get 3,500 cuts out of 4-inch diameter tubing with a 1/8-inch thick wall. Compared to an abrasive saw, it is a night and day difference. With any ceram carbide blade, you will see a little bit more sparking, but the cuts are still cold to the touch right after you finish them. The finish is really nice, and the blades last a long time.

There is also an Evoax blade for aluminum available separately. Changing the blades is pretty easy. Behind the fence, there is an Allen wrench that has been designed to fit every screw you might need to loosen on the saw. There is a push button to lock the arbor from rotating on the motor. The aluminum blade is a 100-tooth tungsten carbide blade designed with geometry specific for that softer aluminum material. Just like with steel, the cut was cool to the touch right when done, with not much of a burr, and it was nice and square in both directions.

The Evolution S14MCS is a capable mitering chopsaw that brings several meaningful upgrades over traditional designs. The pivoting head is a genuine advantage for anyone working in a tight space or cutting long pieces of material. The shadow line makes cut placement fast and accurate without calibration. The intelligent motor and ceram carbide blade are designed to extend blade life and reduce the hassle of tripping breakers. The clamping system is versatile, with quick-release clamps and V-blocks for round stock.
