EGO 52-Inch Battery-Powered Zero-Turn Mower Review: Big-Deck Power Without the Gas

A 52-inch fabricated deck, six 12Ah batteries, and a 25 horsepower gas equivalent make EGO's biggest zero-turn a serious option for large lawns.

Introduction

The EGO 52-inch battery-powered zero-turn mower builds directly on the platform of the 42-inch model from the previous year, but there is plenty here that is new: a larger fabricated deck, three blades, six of EGO’s biggest battery packs, and a gasoline-equivalent output of 25 horsepower. It is aimed at owners of larger properties who want zero-turn handling without the noise, fumes, and maintenance of gas.

Controls and Performance Modes

The lap bars are carried over and remain calibratable, so if one side of the mower drives slightly differently than the other, you can correct it yourself. The control deck keeps the same LCD screen, blade controls, and key start/stop, but the panel now offers multiple blade speed modes and multiple drive speed modes.

There are also three drive modes: Control, Standard, and Sport. Standard is the everyday choice for experienced operators, Sport delivers noticeably jumpier acceleration, and Control dials things back for anyone still getting comfortable with a zero-turn. One extra worth knowing about is a blade turbo mode: holding the blade control for about five seconds bumps the blades into maximum output, useful for thick patches of grass, though it drains the batteries noticeably faster, so the idea is to use it briefly and then drop back down.

Blade speed matters for cut quality. At high blade speed, the mower delivers its best cut and the most even distribution of clippings during peak growing season. In drier or thinner grass, you can get away with lower blade speeds. The 52-inch deck runs three blades underneath, and a practical touch carried over is a phone-sized storage pocket on the dash, handy for keeping a phone secure and away from the blades.

Deck, Cut Height, and Lighting

The deck itself is a significant change. It has grown 10 inches to 52 inches, and EGO shifted from a stamped steel deck to a fabricated one with three blades, which feels appropriately more durable for a mower this size. Deck height adjustment is still a one-hand operation from the right-hand side, though the one-third-inch increments may feel fussy if you want finer gradations between cut heights.

Front LED lights are standard on most battery mowers now, but EGO went further and added LEDs on the sides too. The result is a broader and brighter light throw than other mowers, which genuinely helps if you mow after dark.

Comfort and Convenience Details

Among the battery-powered zero-turns available, EGO’s seat is the most comfortable and the most adjustable. There is plenty of fore-and-aft room for different heights, and like a professional-grade mower it has a seat tension adjustment: lighter riders can soften it to avoid being jolted on bumps, while heavier riders can firm it up so they are not bottoming out.

Storage is thoughtful as well. A pair of cup holders on the left side includes one big enough for a large soft drink cup. Under a latch there is a storage area with a magnetic closure and a 1.5 amp USB port, so you can plug your phone in and let it charge while you mow.

Batteries and Charging

This model comes with six 12 amp hour batteries, the largest packs EGO currently makes. The charging port sits under a spring-loaded latch, and the nicest part is that you plug the charger straight in without removing any batteries. The mower can even act as a six-port charger for your other EGO batteries, and a full charge of all six packs takes about four hours.

A battery level indicator sits right at your feet where it is easy to read while mowing, and it starts blinking when you are running low. If the charge gets critically low, the motor drops into a limp mode so you can get back to the charger instead of being stuck mid-field. You should run all six packs for maximum power and run time, and any combination works as long as you have at least 15 amp hours installed.

Performance and Run Time

In run time testing with blade speed and drive speed both at level four high (not turbo) on a medium cut in bahia and St. Augustine grass, the mower ran for an hour and fifteen minutes. Maintained at top speed, that would cover four and a half acres. Realistically, most operators mow around four to four and a half miles per hour, which works out to easily two and a half to three acres per charge.

Price and Who It Is For

The mower, along with six 12 amp hour batteries and the onboard fast charging, runs $6,999.99. That is not cheap, but a machine in this class is not expected to be inexpensive. The $6,999.99 package buys the 52-inch fabricated deck, six of EGO’s largest batteries, and the convenience of onboard charging.

This mower makes the most sense for owners of two-and-a-half to four-acre properties who want to move fully off gas without giving up deck size or cutting power.

Conclusion

The EGO 52-inch zero-turn takes what worked on the 42-inch model and scales it up: a more durable fabricated deck, three blades, the biggest batteries EGO makes, expanded lighting, a genuinely comfortable seat, and gas-equivalent power. If you have several acres to maintain and want zero-turn agility with battery convenience, it is one of the most complete packages available.
