DeWalt Tough System 2.0 Adjustable Light and Storage System Review: A Light and a Toolbox in One

DeWalt's Tough System 2.0 Adjustable Light combines 4,000 lumens of adjustable lighting with stackable tool storage, though a few quirks are worth knowing before buying.

Introduction

Some jobsite lights are just lights. DeWalt’s Tough System 2.0 Adjustable Light and Storage System tries to be more than that, combining a dual-head adjustable work light with a stackable storage box that integrates into the Tough System case lineup. For tradespeople who carry tools into someone’s home, basement, or crawlspace, that combination is genuinely appealing: light and gear travel together in one unit.

Who This Product Is For

If you work in HVAC, electrical, or any trade where you walk into a customer’s house with an armful of tools, this is designed with you in mind. You can stack your tools around the light, roll or carry the whole unit in, set it down, and have both illumination and organized storage in one footprint. It also works standalone, hung by the handle or a rafter hook, mounted to a tripod, or simply placed on the floor.

Lighting Performance

The unit features two independently operated lamp heads, each with high, medium, low, and off modes. Both lights work at the same time, though you cycle through modes to turn each one off: they turn on in high and step down from there, and they do not remember your previous setting.

With both lights on high, output is approximately 4,000 lumens, running around 3 hours on a 5 amp hour battery. On low, the light sips battery power very lightly, which makes it practical for long work sessions. One lamp on high puts out roughly 2,000 lumens, which is plenty to work by at close range. At 12 or so feet away, it reads more as a supplemental light, but get closer and it easily adds more light than you need for the task.

Brightness is consistent whether you run it on battery or plugged into an extension cord.

Mounting and Placement Flexibility

DeWalt allows this light portion to disconnect from the storage box, and that is where the design gets interesting. You can hang it by the handle, hang it by a rafter hook, connect it to a tripod in two different sizes, or set it on the floor and let it do its thing. Each lamp head twists essentially a full 360 degrees, with a detent at the bottom that holds them snapped down when not in use.

One limitation: the lamps cannot be aimed straight down. They need to sit up at least a bit, sometimes quite a bit, to stay on.

The Storage Box: Built for Tradespeople

The bottom box is what makes this more than a light. It has four drain holes in the bottom corners, positioned in low spots so water that gets in is pushed back out. That means it can take some water, but it will also let water in. If you need it fully sealed, silicone over the holes is a simple fix.

The handle moves forward and back, and when lifted straight up it locks into place, so it will not flop around while you carry the box. The box supports organizers inside, and the light unit takes up half a slot in your Tough System case, locking in solidly and releasing easily.

Battery and Power Options

Battery installation is not difficult, though larger batteries leave less room for your thumb at the back. If you have larger hands, you need to work your thumb out of the way. The lamp heads twist back and forth easily through their full range of movement.

The rear panel has a rubber-sealed extension cord inlet that is a little stiff but well sealed, and it is in a spot that looks like it should take some water, though the battery connection on top is more exposed. Notably, there is no IP rating on the light portion as far as one can be found.

A green indicator appears on the bottom panel when plugged in, and switching between corded and battery power is nearly seamless. One significant gap: this unit will not charge a battery while it is plugged in.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The main handling quirk involves the top surface. When you press down on the light unit to release it from the box, the top does not move, which lets you pick it up. But if your hand rests on the top at all, the slightest pressure springs the handle forward, making removal awkward. The trick is to push the release, keep your hand off the top, then lift.

MSRP is $219 without a battery. Since the light works plugged in, a battery is not required, but it is handy for carrying it around. Deals exist: Acme Tools has had a code bringing it to $199, though that may not last.

A useful stacking tip: a 6 amp hour battery fits, and you can put a case on top with no issue, though a FlexVolt battery will run the light fine but prevents stacking.

Stackable modular tool boxes arranged on a workshop floor

The one feature the reviewer in us wishes existed is a seat on top, so you could carry tools in the bottom, take the light off, and sit to work. In practice that would get in the way and probably be a net negative, but it is a fun thought.

Buying Advice

This is priced as a premium accessory, and it makes the most sense if you already use Tough System cases or if you regularly work in customers’ homes where a combined light-and-storage unit saves trips. If you only need a bright work light and never stack tools, a simpler standalone light may serve you better for less money. If the stackable ecosystem appeals to you, DeWalt has largely hit this one out of the park.

Conclusion

The DeWalt Tough System 2.0 Adjustable Light and Storage System is a thoughtful combination: genuinely bright dual-head lighting, flexible mounting, corded or battery power, and a practical storage box with smart drain-hole design. The mode-cycling lights, the no-battery-charging limitation, and the top-handle quirk are minor annoyances rather than dealbreakers. For tradespeople who want their light and tools to travel together, it is a cool, well-executed unit that is worth serious consideration.
