DeWalt StealthSonic 12 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum Review: Quiet Power for the Workshop
A quiet, well-built 8-amp wet/dry vacuum with solid suction, a thoughtful hose design, and fast water pickup. Here is what stood out in testing.
Introduction
Most shop vacuums force a compromise: strong suction usually comes with a noise level that makes conversation impossible. The DeWalt StealthSonic 12 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum is built specifically to break that pattern, and it does so convincingly. Rated at 65 dB, this 8-amp wet/dry vacuum is quiet enough that you can easily talk over it while it runs, yet it still delivers useful everyday suction for sawdust, debris, and water.

It is not the cheapest wet/dry vacuum you can buy, and it is not the most powerful either. What it offers instead is a rare combination of quiet operation, solid build quality, and practical features that make it a strong pick for contractors and prosumers who want a machine they can actually live with.
Who This Product Is For
This vacuum is best suited to workshops and job sites where noise matters. If you work indoors, share a space, or simply dislike shouting over your tools, the StealthSonic design is the main reason to choose this model. It is also a good fit for anyone who wants a large-capacity wet/dry vacuum with a generous accessory package and a bagged cleanup option for fine dust.
It is less ideal if you need maximum raw suction above all else. With an 8-amp motor, it will not match larger, louder 12-amp class vacuums in pure pull.
How StealthSonic Makes It Quiet
DeWalt’s quiet technology is based on two rear exhaust ports that split and diffuse the outgoing air instead of pushing it through a single vent. Foam on the inside further dampens the sound. Sit behind the unit while it runs and it remains very quiet, with air exiting gently through both vents rather than roaring out of one.

The rated noise level is 65 dB, and in testing it measured even lower than that figure. It is by far one of the quietest vacuums in this class, and it makes working around the machine genuinely pleasant.
Specs and What They Actually Mean
On paper, this is a 12-gallon, 8-amp vacuum rated at 5.5 horsepower, weighing 25.3 lb, with a 20-foot power cord, a 2.5-inch diameter hose, and a 7-foot hose length. A few caveats are worth knowing before you buy:
- The 5.5 horsepower rating uses the industry’s standard peak rating method, which is not physically possible at this amperage. A true 6.5 horsepower vacuum would typically draw 11 to 12 amps.
- The 12-gallon figure refers to canister size, not actual capacity. In practice it will hold closer to 11 gallons.
- Power draw in testing started around 11.2 amps at spin-up, then settled at almost exactly 8 amps, which is right on spec. Running wattage measured about 892 W.
For comparison, a louder competitor rated at 6.5 horsepower spiked over 15 amps at startup and settled around 11.5 amps. You can hear the difference in noise between the two machines just as clearly as you can see the difference in power.
Design, Hose, and Everyday Usability
The overall design follows DeWalt’s familiar shop vacuum layout, with a top handle and a built-in cord wrap that make it easy to pick up. It does not feel like a 25-pound machine. The hose wrap is sturdy and useful: you can leave the hose connected, coil it around the housing, and use a small snatch-block style clip to keep it locked in place, which holds a fairly large hose better than many competing designs.

The hose itself is one of the highlights. Both ends swivel, so even when coiled you can move it freely to where you need it, and kinking takes real effort. Two side clips allow the top section to be removed easily, and the bottom filter uses a simple lock/unlock tab that stays seated tightly. Inside the canister, a float ball stops suction during wet pickup, and storage at the rear keeps the included accessories organized.
Accessories and Bagged Cleanup
The accessory package is generous: crevice nozzles, wet and dry floor cleaners, brushes, and a filter bag option. The bag wraps around the canister with its hole fitted over the inlet, letting you collect debris directly into the bag for cleaner disposal.
There are trade-offs to know about. The bag adds one more filter for air to pass through, and some fine sawdust did escape past the bag during testing, settling around the bottom of the canister. Running without the bag, the internal cyclone action worked well, sending sawdust down to the bottom and leaving the pleated filter only lightly dusted rather than clogged, which is exactly what you want.
Suction and Water Pickup Test
Dry pickup showed no problems: mixed shop debris, extensions, and odds and ends were collected easily, and strong suction remained even with the bag installed. The real surprise was the water test. Using roughly 12 gallons of water in a bin, the vacuum shut itself off after pulling almost all of it in just under 11 seconds, with about a gallon and a half left in the source bin.

That speed is remarkable for this class. Comparable same-size vacuums with slightly more power have taken around 14 seconds for the same job. One design note: once you shut the vacuum off, a couple of gallons of water flowed back out through the hose, so expect some return flow when the motor stops, and be careful moving the unit when full.
Things to Consider Before Buying
- It is quiet, not powerful. Suction is good but not the same class as a true 6.5 horsepower machine.
- Expect return water from the hose when the vacuum shuts off during wet pickup.
- A small amount of fine dust can pass the bag, so check around the canister after fine-dust jobs.
- It is priced above basic wet/dry vacuums, and you are partly paying for the quiet operation and build quality.
Buying Advice
If a super-quiet, well-built wet/dry vacuum with good suction and fast water pickup fits your needs, this is exactly the machine for it. Contractors and prosumers are the natural audience, and it is easy to imagine this becoming a top seller in its class once people experience how quiet it really is. In a store, you could turn it on and hold a conversation right next to it, which says more than any spec sheet.
Conclusion
The DeWalt StealthSonic 12 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum trades peak power for something most shop vacuums never offer: quiet, comfortable operation backed by strong build quality and excellent water pickup speed. If quiet is a priority in your workshop, it is an easy recommendation.
