DeWalt Stealth Sonic vs Hercules Dust Collector: The Quieter Workshop Vacuum Wins

A head-to-head look at the DeWalt Stealth Sonic 5-gallon stainless steel wet/dry vac against the Hercules dust collector, focused on noise, suction power, and everyday usability.

Introduction

If you have ever winced through a full workshop session with a standard wet/dry vac, the idea of a vacuum you can actually talk over sounds too good to be true. That is exactly the promise of the DeWalt Stealth Sonic series, which has been earning word-of-mouth attention for well over a year. To put it to the test, we ran the 5-gallon stainless steel Stealth Sonic against a Hercules dust collector, comparing measured loudness, actual suction power, and day-to-day handling.

The Loudness Test

The first comparison was straightforward: run both machines and measure them with a sound level meter held at the same distance. The red conventional vacuum measured 90 dB, while the Hercules dust collector came in at 76 dB.

The Stealth Sonic landed on the quieter side of the Hercules, and the difference goes beyond raw numbers. The pitch of the motor is noticeably different, to the point where it does not hurt your ears. You can hold a normal conversation while it is running. For perspective, every 3 dB is a real difference, and every 10 dB is perceived as roughly twice as loud, so a 16 dB gap is enormous in practice.

Does Quieter Mean Weaker?

The obvious follow-up question is whether the quieter motor sacrifices suction. Both machines were put on the same pile of shavings and dust, and both cleared it without issue. The Stealth Sonic handled the test pile just as the Hercules did, which suggests the noise reduction does not come at the cost of pickup performance.

That combination is the whole appeal: real suction, without the eardrum punishment.

Design and Features

The tested unit is the 5-gallon Stealth Sonic with a stainless steel drum. It comes with a full set of attachments, a filter bag, and an attachment system that keeps everything secured so your accessories are not flopping around or getting lost. There is a hose strap with a small bungee cord for storing the hose, and a large handle that is almost like a boat cleat, easy to grab and carry.

Other details worth noting: easy cord wrap, a big toggle switch on top, a 4 horsepower motor (with the usual marketing asterisks attached), and a quick-connect locking port that proved easy to use. The swivel connections felt solid, and the drum opens up easily for access to the filter. The unit also has rear ducts for exhaust.

Everyday Usability

Day to day, the Stealth Sonic is the kind of tool you stop dreading. Opening it up to change or clean the filter is quick, the accessories store neatly on the machine, and the stainless tank should shrug off the bumps of a working shop.

The biggest caveat is price. These are higher-end units and they are not inexpensive. You are paying for well-made construction and, crucially, for not bleeding out your ears every time you clean up the shop.

Buying Advice

If you run a vacuum constantly in your shop, the hearing argument alone justifies the premium. Repeated exposure to a 90 dB machine is the kind of thing you only appreciate after the damage is done, and the Stealth Sonic’s quieter, lower-pitched motor meaningfully reduces that risk. The Hercules dust collector remains a capable option at its own price point for dust filtration duty, but the Stealth Sonic is the pick for anyone who values comfort and hearing protection. If a Stealth Sonic is not in the budget yet, at minimum wear hearing protection around conventional vacuums.

Conclusion

The DeWalt Stealth Sonic 5-gallon stainless steel wet/dry vac delivers on its core promise: it is dramatically quieter than a conventional shop vac, with a lower-pitched motor that does not fatigue your ears, and it loses nothing in suction. It is well built, thoughtfully accessorized, and not cheap. For anyone who spends long hours in a workshop and wants to protect their hearing, it is an easy recommendation.
