DeWalt 20V Heated Hoodie Review: A Warm Layer for Cold Mornings and Late Evenings

A quiet, well-fitting heated hoodie with three heat settings, two battery placement options, and a soft sleeve lining. Here is how it performs for hunting and outdoor work.

Introduction

Early fall brings a specific clothing problem: warm afternoons, but cold mornings and cold evenings. You want something you can throw on for hunting or outdoor work that will not make you sweat during the day, yet can deliver heat when the temperature drops. The DeWalt 20V Heated Hoodie aims to fill exactly that gap, and this season it has proven itself as a reliable layer for time in a tree stand and around the property.

Heat Settings and Heat Zones

The hoodie works as a zip-up with a control button on the inside. Press and hold the button and the heat comes on. Each subsequent press cycles through three settings: red, then white, then blue, and back up to red. Holding the button again shuts it off.

The heat zones are straightforward. There is a smaller heating pad on one chest side, a larger pad in the center that heats up quickly, and a matching pad on the other side. Using a thermal camera, the center pad peaked around 121 degrees at its hottest point, and the side pads warmed up nearly as fast. It heats up quickly and evenly across the torso.

One thing it does not have is pocket warmers. That is the one missing feature worth mentioning, since heated hand pockets would be a nice addition on colder sits.

Battery Placement and the Comfort Trick

There are two places to put the battery. The conventional spot is a compartment in the back, which is standard for most heated jackets. The hoodie also has an inside front pocket area where the battery can sit.

The included battery is a 20V pack, and with its adapter it is quite large. You can run any 20V DeWalt battery, including a FlexVolt if you want to get serious, and the kit comes with a 2 amp hour pack. Larger 3 or 4 amp hour packs work too, though they are a little wider.

Here is the trick: if you are already in the Milwaukee M12 system, you can use an adapter with a smaller M12 battery instead. The difference in size and comfort is night and day. With a 3 amp hour M12 pack inside, the hoodie feels dramatically less bulky, like the difference between a large brick and something you barely notice. Runtime and heat cycle are nearly identical, maybe down a few minutes at most. The only requirement is that you have to be in the Milwaukee M12 system for this to work.

For what it is worth, the author of this trick suspects a DeWalt 12V battery with an adapter could work similarly, though it has not been tested. If it fits, a 5 amp hour 12V pack could be a genuine game changer, and it raises the question of why this is not a 12V jacket in the first place.

Interior Design and Lining

Open the hoodie up and the first thing you notice is a very soft felt lining in the sleeves. It is a feature you will either love or not, but with a t-shirt underneath it is absolutely amazing: very warm and very comfortable. Small keeper tabs hold the sleeves forward so the lining does not stick and bunch when you slide your arms in.

The rest of the interior is soft as well, and there is a lower access zipper that lets you get inside the lining panels. From there you can reach the heating system, move wires around, or even add padding for extra comfort in a stand. It is a slick bit of design that makes the hoodie more adaptable than most.

On the storage side, there is an inside pocket, wire routing for earphones or charging a phone, a simple hoodie pocket that does not go all the way through, and a kidney-style pocket intended for the battery and the extension cable that runs around to the front. The hood has large, sturdy drawstring ties that are not coming apart any time soon.

Sizing, Fit, and Everyday Comfort

Sizing on this hoodie is spot on. The tested size is an extra large, and the fit works well for someone around 6’3” to 6’4” with a broad wingspan. It is not bulky, not too short, and everything lands where it should. It flexes and stretches with you when you move, so raising an arm does not drag the whole jacket up with it.

The hood itself gets mixed use. Some riders and hunters will zip it fully and pull it up over a hat, which works nicely in a tree stand. Others find it does not come around far enough to block vision, which is actually a plus for people who want full peripheral awareness.

Another quiet strength is exactly that: it is quiet. You can move around, work, or sit in a stand without fabric noise giving you away. Paired with a scent-locking base layer underneath, it makes a solid hunting setup for the early season.

Runtime and Value

With the included 2 amp hour DeWalt battery, runtime on high is around 2 to 2.5 hours. On low, it is close to all day. Using the smaller M12 battery, runtime is nearly identical, possibly a few minutes shorter. That range covers most cold mornings and evenings without issue.

Pricing runs between $159 and $209 depending on where you catch it, and it comes with a battery and adapter in the box. Waiting for a sale is a reasonable move. If you are already in the Milwaukee M12 line, that smaller battery setup is the way to go for comfort, but the hoodie itself stands on its own.

Conclusion

The DeWalt 20V Heated Hoodie is a strong pick for hunters and anyone working outdoors in that awkward early-fall window. It heats fast, fits well, stays quiet, and offers a genuinely useful interior layout. The large 20V battery is its main compromise, and the M12 adapter workaround solves it elegantly if you already own that gear. For the price, it earns its place as a seasonal layer you will reach for again and again.
