Introduction

Valve’s Steam Machine has generated a lot of interest, but the base model comes in at over $1,000 with limited availability. For gamers who want the Steam OS experience without that price tag, building a custom machine is a practical alternative. This build uses a Minisforum BD770i motherboard and an AMD RX7600 GPU to deliver strong performance at a significantly lower cost.

The result is a small form factor gaming PC that runs Steam OS and outperforms the official Steam Machine in most titles. It does not match the ultra-compact form factor of the official console, but it offers a compelling balance of price, performance, and size.

The Build at a Glance

The custom build uses a no-name case from Amazon that includes a riser card for $79. The case supports a vertical GPU mount, which is essential for fitting a full-size graphics card into a compact chassis. The side panel has limited ventilation, especially where the GPU sits, so a 3D printed honeycomb panel is a useful upgrade for better airflow.

The motherboard is a Minisforum BD770i, which uses a mobile CPU with eight cores and eight threads. The board includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet, and everything works well with Steam OS. The system is paired with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM running at 4,800 MHz and a 512 GB M.2 SSD for storage.

The Hardware

The Minisforum BD770i is a compact ITX motherboard designed for small form factor builds. It uses the AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX processor, which has eight cores and sixteen threads. This mobile CPU provides solid performance for gaming while keeping power consumption and heat output manageable in a small case.

The AMD RX7600 GPU brings 8 GB of VRAM and is based on the RDNA 3 architecture. It is a solid choice for 1080p gaming at ultra settings and handles 1440p well with some upscaling. The card was purchased used from eBay, which helped keep the total build cost down.

Setting Up Steam OS

Installing Steam OS on the custom build uses the official Steam Deck recovery image from Valve’s website. After updating to the main branch, the system runs just like a Steam Deck. One issue appeared during testing: with the internal iGPU enabled in the BIOS, the system defaulted to it and performance suffered significantly. Disabling the iGPU in the BIOS fixed the problem and allowed the system to rely on the RX7600.

The system runs Steam OS 3.9 with the Steam beta client. Decky Loader was installed for customization, which changes the look of the interface. Everything else works out of the box, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet.

Performance Testing

Benchmark results show a clear performance advantage over the official Steam Machine. In Cyberpunk 2077 at ultra settings with no FSR, the custom build delivers around 83 FPS at 1080p, a 12% improvement over the Steam Machine. At 1440p, the gain is around 20%, and at 4K, the custom build is about 50% faster.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider shows an 8% gain at 1080p, 12% at 1440p, and 30% at 4K. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered delivers a 19% gain at 1080p, 17% at 1440p, and 23% at 4K. Across these three games, the average uplift is around 21% when averaging all resolutions.

Gaming Experience

In real-world gaming, the RX7600 handles modern titles well. Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p high settings with FSR 2.1 quality delivers 80 to 83 FPS. FSR 4 is available on the main branch of Steam OS, but it does not pair well with RDNA 3 cards at this time, so FSR 2.1 or 3 is the better choice for frame rate.

Forza Horizon 6 runs at 1440p high with an average of around 84 FPS with no scaling. Spider-Man 2 at 1440p high with FSR balanced delivers a surprisingly high frame rate. Crimson Desert requires frame generation to hit 1440p high on the RX7600. Mortal Kombat 1 runs well at 1440p high with no FSR. Red Dead Redemption 2 works very well at 1440p with a mix of high and ultra settings and no upscaling needed.

Buying Advice

This build makes sense for gamers who want the Steam OS experience without paying over $1,000 for the official Steam Machine. The total cost is significantly lower, and performance is better across the board. The main trade-off is the form factor, which is larger than the official console due to the lack of small form factor low-profile AMD cards.
