Introduction

The Craftsman V20 Brushless RP 7-1/4 in. Circular Saw (model CMCS551) is the step-up version of Craftsman’s cordless circular saw lineup, built around a brushless motor that delivers a meaningful jump in power and runtime. Running a 7-1/4 in. blade at 5,000 RPM, it produces 75% more power than the brushed-motor CMCS500 while using the same 4Ah battery, and it does so with far greater efficiency.

Who This Saw Is For

This saw is aimed at DIYers and framers already invested in the Craftsman V20 platform, which includes more than 100 compatible products. If you cut plywood sheets, frame with dimensional lumber, or make compound cuts in 2x material, its capacity and brushless power plant make sense. It is also a good fit for anyone who values a durable build without stepping up to a heavier, more expensive pro-tier tool.

Cut Performance and Handling

At 90°, the saw cuts up to 2-9/16 in. deep, and up to 2 in. at a 45° bevel. That depth is enough for long straight cuts in plywood and compound cuts in thicker 2x material. When you pull the trigger, an LED automatically lights your cut line, and the design leaves a generous line of sight to the blade for more accurate cuts. Notches marked at 0° and 45° on the stamped aluminum shoe help guide you as you work.

The ergonomics are well thought out. A rubber over-molded front handle keeps your trigger hand comfortable, and a generous front pommel helps you maintain stability and control all the way through the cut.

Build Quality and Weight

Craftsman extends its use of stamped aluminum to the blade guard on this model. Aluminum weighs more than tool plastic, but not by much, and it gives the saw a real boost in durability. Despite the tougher build, the saw weighs just 7.1 lb bare, and 8.8 lb with a 4Ah battery installed, which is very reasonable for extended work sessions.

Adjustments and Bevel Capacity

The saw bevels up to 56° and includes positive stops at 22.5° and 45° for common cuts. Adjusting the bevel is simple: loosen the lever on the front of the saw, pivot the shoe to your angle, and tighten the lever back down.

Blade depth adjusts from 0 to 2-9/16 in. using a release lever behind the motor housing, with markings on the gauge to the right of the handle for quick setup. Craftsman includes a 24-tooth carbide-tipped framing blade with the saw. Blade changes are straightforward: the blade wrench stores on the tool under the blade height lever, and a blade lock button next to the front pommel secures the blade while you loosen the bolt with the wrench. Tighten the new blade by hand with the wrench, never with a power tool.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The battery and charger are sold separately, so budget for them if you are not already in the V20 ecosystem. Craftsman recommends a 4Ah or 6Ah battery for the best performance and runtime. The aluminum blade guard and shoe add a bit of weight compared with plastic alternatives, though the saw’s overall 7.1 lb bare weight keeps this from being a real issue.

Buying Advice

Storage is also handled well: the saw is Craftsman Versa Track compatible, with a notch under the handle, and you can pick up a Versa Track clip to hang it on the Versa Track wall organization system. At $129, the CMCS551 sits at an accessible price for a brushless cordless circular saw, and Craftsman backs it with a 3-year warranty.

Conclusion

The Craftsman V20 Brushless RP CMCS551 is a well-balanced cordless circular saw that pairs a genuine power upgrade with durable aluminum construction and sensible ergonomics. If you are already on the V20 platform or starting fresh with a 7-1/4 in. cordless saw, it delivers the capacity, runtime, and build quality most users will ever need.
