Craftsman V Series Hand Tools: Four Sets Worth a Look From the New Line

The new Craftsman V Series brings polished fit and finish, magnetic trays, and a full lifetime warranty. Here is how the ratchet and three socket sets stack up.

Introduction

The new Craftsman V Series line has a lot of nostalgic pull for anyone who grew up with made-in-USA Craftsman tools. The current V Series hand tools are made in Taiwan rather than the United States, but the fit and finish make a genuinely strong first impression. Craftsman positions the V Series toward professional use, though it is arguably best suited to serious weekend warriors who want good tools, a solid warranty through Lowe’s, and a complete, well-organized kit.

This guide walks through four pieces of the line: the 3/8 drive comfort grip ratchet, the metric 6.2 piece socket set, the SAE socket set, and the deep well socket set. All four share the same recipe: excellent chrome finish, stamped part numbers, magnetic aluminum trays with ball detents, and a full lifetime warranty. Prices land around $55 for the ratchet and the standard socket sets, and $65 for the deep well set, with regular deals to be found if you shop around.

The Ratchet: Comfort Grip 3/8 Drive

The first pick in the V Series is the 3/8 drive comfort grip ratchet, which runs a 96-tooth 3.75 degree arc swing. It is compact and comfortable, which is exactly why it earns a permanent spot in the toolbox. The forward and reverse switch sits low profile so it will not get bumped accidentally, and the area just behind the head is slightly thicker than on some competing ratchets, which is simply the character of the design.

Where this ratchet really shines is the knurled grip area. When switching direction or swinging back and forth quickly, it gives your fingers a secure place to grab, even with dirty hands. The grip texture on the bottom, around the edges, and across the top of the handle all fit the hand well. The chrome finish is wonderful, the engraving is crisp, and at an MSRP of $55 it feels well placed. It is made in Taiwan, and the quality does not disappoint.

The Metric and SAE Socket Sets

The 6.2 piece socket sets come in metric and SAE versions at $55 apiece, and both deliver a fit and finish that feels right. The Craftsman V Series branding and part number are stamped into each socket, the six-point interior is well formed, and the surfaces feel smooth and solidly put together. Checked against higher-end sockets already in the box, the sizing is spot on.

Each set comes with a nice aluminum tray that has plastic socket holders and a ball detent in every hole, so sockets stay in place and do not fall out. The back of the tray is magnetic and labeled Craftsman V Series, which makes the whole thing easy to move around the shop. One practical note: with greasy fingers, the smooth finish can make sockets a little tight to pull out, at least when everything is new.

The metric set runs from 8 mm up to 19 mm with no skips in the sequence, which is worth verifying when you buy, since smaller sets in the wider Craftsman lineup can occasionally miss a size. The SAE set follows the same layout, so double-check the piece count to make sure you are not missing anything.

The Deep Well Socket Set

The deep well socket set was only available in SAE at the time of testing, though metric would arguably see more use for most people. At $65, it carries the same impressive fit and finish as the rest of the line and comes with the same round magnetic aluminum tray, so sockets are not falling out no matter what you do.

The larger hope here is that Craftsman eventually expands this into huge kits covering many more sizes, laid out in these magnetic holders. That combination of full coverage plus magnetic organization is what makes this system genuinely appealing long term.

Buying Advice

A few things are worth knowing before you buy into the V Series. First, the naming can get confusing: there are V Series hand tools, V20, and V60 lines, and the 20V power tools are sold in different places. The V Series hand tools carried at Lowe’s are the Stanley Black & Decker brand versions, and that is where the quality in this lineup really sits, so buy at Lowe’s or verify the seller.

Second, V Series sockets are available in mobile kits and many different configurations, and some of those bundles are a better buy than picking up individual trays. The catch is that many of the bigger kits do not include the mobile magnetic base, which is one of the nicest parts of buying these trays individually. Finally, the warranty is a full lifetime warranty. How Lowe’s handles claims on this new line is still being seen, but the hope is a simple grab a replacement off the shelf experience, much like the old days.

Conclusion

The Craftsman V Series is a step up that honors the brand’s reputation. The comfort grip ratchet is a great daily driver at $55, the metric and SAE socket sets deliver spot-on sizing and clever magnetic trays, and the deep well set rounds things out at $65. Made in Taiwan rather than the USA, but the quality is there, the warranty is there, and the polish should push other brands to raise their game too.
