Carhartt 18 Pocket Tool Roll: A Hands-On Look and Honest Critique

The Carhartt 18 Pocket Tool Roll looks the part, but small parts fall out when rolled sideways. Here is what works, what doesn't, and what we'd want fixed.

Introduction

The Carhartt 18 Pocket Tool Roll is an interesting case: it looks great, it comes from a brand with serious workwear credibility, and yet it has one flaw that matters a lot for anyone who actually carries tools in it. After spending time with it, the main problem became obvious: tip the roll sideways and things fall out. That single issue pushed us toward other tool rolls, but this one is still worth a close look, especially now that the design appears to be up for revision.

Design and Build

The layout is straightforward. The exterior carries a row of pockets sized for standard hand tools, and inside there are three velcro-closed pockets for smaller items. Everything is wrapped in Carhartt’s familiar brown canvas, which is genuinely attractive and fits the brand’s identity. When rolled up from the open end, the roll takes up surprisingly little space in a bag or on a shelf.

Pocket alignment, a common annoyance with tool rolls where a bulky item in one pocket blocks access to the one below it, is handled well here. The rows are offset enough that you can use neighbouring pockets and the one underneath without interference.

Straps, Buckles, and Portability

The roll closes with two nylon straps and plastic buckles, and the straps are generous in length. That is a good thing in practice: you can cinch up a roll loaded with oversized items, and there is plenty of strap to spare for something bulkier than the roll itself.

The buckles are large one-inch units, noticeably bigger than the small hardware on some competing rolls. That makes them easier to work with, particularly with gloves on. The one drawback is the small strap-management tabs, which make pulling the straps through a bit more fiddly than it needs to be.

The Velcro Pocket Problem

Here is the core issue. The three interior pockets close with a small strip of velcro, and it simply does not hold small parts securely. Small sockets, extensions, and other pieces that get lost easily slip out when the roll is tipped. We had hoped the pockets would hold a large socket, and larger items are fine, but anything small is a gamble.

A zipper closure would solve this, though zippers add cost. A flap would also help, and the overall size feels right as is. There is even room for more: a small zip pouch on the front, or additional pockets on both sides, would raise the price slightly but add real utility.

What We’d Want in a Redesign

Beyond the closure, a few ideas stand out. More than three interior pockets would be welcome, possibly mirrored on both sides, since a single long pocket competes with the exterior rows for the same kinds of tools. Better external attachment points would help too: there is currently only one external handle, so hooking or clipping extra gear to the outside is awkward.

Colour options would be a nice touch as well. The brown canvas is classic, but a bright orange or safety yellow version would be easier to spot in a busy workshop, and a camo option would likely find an audience too.

Buying Advice

If you mostly carry larger hand tools and love the Carhartt look, this roll works well: pocket spacing is smart, straps are excellent, and the canvas is durable and handsome. If you carry small sockets, bits, and extensions, be aware that the velcro pockets will not keep them contained when the roll moves around. Consider it for larger tools, or wait to see whether a revised version addresses the closure.

Conclusion

The Carhartt 18 Pocket Tool Roll gets a lot right: attractive canvas, generous straps, large easy-to-use buckles, and sensible pocket offset. The weak velcro closure on the interior pockets is the one flaw that keeps it from being an easy recommendation for everyone. If a redesign fixes that, this could become a genuinely great tool roll.
