CarABC 8.8-Inch Portable CarPlay Screen Review: Add CarPlay to an Older Truck
An 8.8-inch 1080p portable CarPlay and Android Auto touchscreen that brings modern smartphone mirroring to vehicles without it.
Introduction
If you drive an older or base-trim vehicle, you already know the pain of missing CarPlay and Android Auto. The CarABC 8.8-inch portable touchscreen sets out to fix exactly that, adding full 1080p smartphone mirroring to almost any car or truck without replacing the factory radio. It sells for just over $200, which puts it in line with a decent tablet rather than a full head unit swap.
We tested it in a Ram 2500 Tradesman, a work truck with a small factory screen and no CarPlay or Android Auto support. Here is how it held up.
What’s in the Box
The package is refreshingly simple. Inside you get the 8.8-inch display itself, a suction-style mount, a USB-C cable for power and connection, a cigarette lighter adapter for vehicles without a direct power outlet, and a 3.5mm aux cable for cars without Bluetooth audio.

One design note worth mentioning: the mount is a slide-on style rather than a magnetic one. Attaching the screen to the mount while it is already positioned on the dash is a little fiddly, and magnetic mounts we have seen on similar products tend to be easier to work with.
Installation Is Easier Than You’d Expect
These screens look intimidating, but the setup is genuinely simple. The connection is mostly Bluetooth: pair your phone, plug the screen into power, and it takes over from there. Your phone connects to two devices at once, the screen for CarPlay or Android Auto and your factory radio for audio.

That two-connection setup means music plays through your existing speakers while navigation and apps run on the new display. Once the phone is paired, CarPlay or Android Auto launches automatically every time.
Screen Quality and Performance
The display is the strong point here. At 8.8 inches and full 1080p, it looks sharp and remains readable in bright direct sunlight, which matters if you drive in sunny climates. It is also only about half an inch smaller than a competing 9-inch model, so the size difference is negligible in practice.
Touch responsiveness is good but not flawless. Scrolling shows a small amount of lag, and the map occasionally stutters. For the price, it is not a dealbreaker, but it is worth knowing before you buy.
The one real complaint is the USB-C connection. The port sits inside a small lip, so you cannot use just any USB-C cable. You need a thinner, specific type of cable to fit properly. Beyond that quirk, the connection itself is reliable.
Buying Advice
For anyone driving a base-trim or older vehicle, this is a far smarter move than trading in a truck just to get CarPlay. Spending a couple hundred dollars here beats spending fifteen to twenty thousand or more on a newer vehicle for the same feature.

If your car has Bluetooth audio and a power outlet, you have everything needed for a working setup in minutes. If your vehicle lacks Bluetooth, the included 3.5mm jack keeps audio options open, and the cigarette lighter adapter covers power.
Conclusion
The CarABC 8.8-inch portable touchscreen delivers on its core promise: easy installation, a bright and sharp 1080p display, and working CarPlay and Android Auto in vehicles that never had them. Minor lag in scrolling and a picky USB-C port are the only real drawbacks. For older trucks and base-trim cars, it is an easy recommendation.
