Big Idea Design Overlook Review: A Refined Titanium EDC Folder Worth the Wait

The Overlook combines lessons from Big Idea Design's earlier folders and the Lookout fixed blade into what may be their most refined folding knife yet.

Introduction

Big Idea Design built its reputation on titanium pocket tools and pens, and the Overlook is its third folding knife. After a couple of weeks of handling, it is hard not to see this as their most accomplished folder to date. It is a knife that feels like it was designed with knife enthusiasts in mind first, rather than a pocket tool that happens to include a blade.

The Road to the Overlook

Understanding why the Overlook feels so mature means looking at the knives that came before it. In 2023, the TI Pocket Knife brought titanium scales, a reversible pocket clip, a hollow ground S45VN blade, and an inline flipper. On paper, it checked a lot of EDC boxes, but it never quite felt refined, more like a pocket tool with a blade added.

Late in 2023, Big Idea Design surprised everyone with the Lookout, its first fixed blade and the first knife made in its new USA shop in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The US-made versions came in MagnaCut with a leather sheath and a fantastic blade-to-handle ratio, and later overseas production versions arrived in titanium with an M390 blade. It became a genuine staple for the brand.

The TI Pocket Knife 2 followed at the end of 2024. It addressed feedback with M390 steel, a flat ground blade, and a smoother, more fidgety action, but it still carried that tool-like DNA and still did not fully land as a true enthusiast folder.

Design and First Impressions

The Overlook feels like a combination of everything the brand learned from the TI Pocket Knife and the Lookout. It keeps some of the tool-looking DNA of the earlier folders while borrowing from the silhouette of the Lookout, and the result feels deliberate rather than cautious.

Here are the key specs:

  • Overall length: 6.25 inches
  • Blade length: 2.62 inches
  • Blade steel: M390
  • Grade 5 titanium scales with a stonewashed finish
  • Reversible pocket clip with an added end cap
  • Frame lock

In-Hand Feel and Handling

The first impression is simply impressive. The Overlook initially felt a touch small in hand, but after carrying it for a while, the ergonomics clicked. It is a really good four-finger grip, and the blade is sharp and slicy. The thumb studs make deployment fun and endlessly fidgety.

The frame lock is easy to disengage, and the blade has a nice drop-shut action. It does not slam shut like a guillotine; it drops to your thumb smoothly. The knife is also lightweight, which makes it easy to carry in a pocket or stash in a pouch in a truck or backpack. It is the kind of knife you can fidget with on the couch indefinitely.

Buying Advice

At $220, the Overlook offers M390 steel, titanium scales, thumb studs, a reversible pocket clip, and a genuinely fun action. That is a lot of value at this price point.

It also carries a classic feel that invites comparison to something like a small Sebenza, but at a more affordable price. If you want that timeless, refined look in a folder without stepping up to the higher-end market, the Overlook makes a compelling case. Its lightweight build also means it works as a pocket knife or as a pouch knife for a truck or bag.

Conclusion

The journey from the TI Pocket Knife to the Overlook shows a brand that kept refining until it arrived. The Overlook is sleek, well-built, and thoughtfully spec’d, and for many it will be the folder that proves Big Idea Design is not just dabbling in knives anymore. If you have been waiting for a titanium M390 folder with a smooth action and classic proportions, this one deserves a close look.
