The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is still one of the most powerful upright vacuums we have tested to date. It had so much suction that it had minor issues getting on top of cereal on high-pile carpet. Despite that, it is a fantastic performer, removing 96.3% of debris across all floor types.

Pet hair was not an issue for the Animal 2, although long hair was more of a concern, with 48% of long hair tangling in our test. It was fairly easy to remove, though. The dust bin was mostly sealed, leaking some smoke from our smoke machine, but we believe it is not enough to warrant significant concern. Most likely the seal has weakened over years of use in our lab, as the Animal 2 has been in service since 2018. Despite these minor issues, it remains a high-performance upright vacuum and a good pick.

Shark Vertex DuoClean

The Shark Vertex DuoClean shows the evolution from older Shark models to the Stratos. It has a lot of similar features we see in multiple Shark uprights, paired with excellent performance. It also introduced the improved PowerFins, which replace the more traditional bristles from the previous version.

In our test, the Vertex showcased excellent performance across the board. It removed 99.4% of debris across all floor types, had no issues with long or pet hair, and removed debris along edges and crevices. The device is completely sealed, packs a 0.24 gallon dust bin and a 34 foot cord, giving it a healthy amount of reach while cleaning. It has the lift-away feature, a soft roller brush on the front, and comes with a number of useful accessories.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro

Due to its age and price, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro has some shortcomings. It had lackluster performance on high-pile carpet, only removing 60.5% of debris. This is largely due to the height of the brush roll, which has a harder time getting on top of cereal and instead pushes more of it forward.

Looking at other floor types, the Navigator showed great results on both hardwood and low-pile carpet, removing 92.0% of all debris. It managed long and pet hair with excellent results. While it had no issues with debris along edges, it did have some issues cleaning in crevices, with only 59.4% of debris removed in our crevice test using a single forward and backward pass.

The Navigator has a 0.55 gallon dust bin that is completely sealed, paired with a 30 foot cord. It comes with helpful attachments like the pet power brush and has the ability to lift away like many other Shark uprights. It is not perfect, but considering how inexpensive it is compared to many other upright vacuums, it is an excellent deal.

Shark Rotator Lift-Away

Similar to the Shark Navigator, the Shark Rotator Lift-Away is not perfect. While it removed 86.4% of all debris from all floor types, it did have some struggles with cereal, especially on high-pile carpet where it struggled to get on top of the debris. Almost half of the long hair was tangled around the brush roll. However, pet hair posed no issue, and practically all of it was removed.

The good news does not stop there. The Rotator was able to remove all of the debris from the edge test and the vast majority of debris from the crevice test. The dust bin is completely sealed, ensuring no debris escapes while cleaning. It is equipped with a 0.33 gallon dust bin, has a 30 foot cord, and is the second lightest vacuum on the list, with the lightest being the Shark Navigator.

The Rotator comes with a set of accessories including the DustAway tool and pet brush that assist in different cleaning situations. The vacuum can also double as a lift-away canister vacuum when needed. It has its shortcomings, but despite these, it still had relatively solid performance across the board.

Price is an important factor, but there are other key factors that set these vacuums apart. The Dyson Ball Animal 3 is a powerhouse of an upright vacuum.
