Best Heavy-Duty Hand Cleaners: 5 Formulas That Earned Top Grades in Grease, Adhesive, and Tar Tests
Five heavy-duty hand cleaners that consistently beat the competition at cutting motor oil, cured tire adhesive, and cured roofing tar, with pricing and texture notes to help you pick.
Introduction
Heavy-duty hand cleaners span a huge price range, from roughly 10 cents per ounce to nearly a dollar per ounce. The question is whether paying more actually gets your hands cleaner. A structured comparison of fourteen popular formulas put that to the test across three real-world challenges: used motor oil, cured tire repair adhesive, and cured roofing tar.
The results were clear. Four formulas earned top grades in all three tests, and one budget pick genuinely punched above its price. Here are the five cleaners worth your money.
How They Were Tested
The comparison used a controlled method rather than subjective hand-wiping. For the oil test, cloths were saturated with dark, used motor oil, treated with a generous dose of each cleaner, agitated in water for 30 seconds, soaked, rinsed, and then judged after drying overnight. The adhesive test used cured tire repair cement on textured rubber strips with a weighted test rig applying consistent pressure. The tar test used roofing cement cured for over 24 hours, attacked with a drill-mounted brush for exactly 10 seconds per product.

Because performance judgment is inherently subjective, the final oil test results were graded with additional input from more than one person, and raw performance was converted to an A through F scale across all three categories.
The Five Cleaners That Earned Top Grades
Force 5 Hand Cleaner
At $10 for 96 ounces, or about 10 cents per ounce, Force 5 is the value story of the entire test. This heavy-duty citrus-based cleaner contains pumice and skin conditioners, and it claims to remove dirt, ink, paint, grease, grime, resins, and tar. The consistency is runny and gritty but not oily or greasy.
In practice, Force 5 was the third-best performer in the oil test, finishing close behind far more expensive competitors, and it went to work on oil almost immediately. It also performed well against roofing tar. If you buy hand cleaner by the gallon and go through a lot of it, this is hard to beat.
Gojo Natural Orange
Priced at $19 per gallon, around 15 cents per ounce, Gojo Natural Orange matched Force 5’s formula style: pumice-based, lightly gritty, and not too oily. It claims to remove dirt, oil, grease, and paint, and it is easy to work with despite the grit.
It earned an A in every test category. In the tar test it cut through the cured roofing cement down to bare wood, and in the adhesive test it placed third overall. It was also one of the more pleasant textures to use, though it is slightly grittier than the Permatex below.
Zep TKO
Zep TKO costs $21 per gallon, roughly 16 cents per ounce. It is solvent-free, uses pumice to scrub away tough soils, and contains lanolin to leave hands feeling soft. It has a higher viscosity than the two cleaners above, with a thick, pasty feel, and it is designed for a dedicated dispenser.
It finished second in the adhesive test and performed extremely well on tar, essentially matching Gojo Orange. It also scored just slightly above average in the oil test. If you want a thick, low-grit-feeling paste with lanolin, this is a strong all-rounder that still costs under 20 cents per ounce.

Permatex Fast Orange Extreme
At $30 per gallon, or about 23 cents per ounce, Fast Orange Extreme is marketed as the most powerful formula in the Permatex lineup. It claims to eliminate odors by encapsulating the smell of gasoline, oil, and other common scents. The texture is gel-like, not oily or greasy, and noticeably more gritty than the standard Permatex DL.
This was the top performer in the tar test, and it placed a very close second to the DL formula in the adhesive test. In the editor’s hands-on assessment, it was the overall favorite for feel: not too gritty, excellent at attacking grease, and it wipes away easily without water, which matters when a rinse is not immediately available.
Zolex Cherry Hand Cleaner
Zolex Cherry costs $35 for 85 ounces, about 41 cents per ounce. It uses a walnut husk scrub to naturally attack dirt, grease, stains, and paint, and it is dispensed from a dedicated dispenser. The smell is distinctly like cherry cough medicine, and the consistency matches.
The performance, however, was the standout. Zolex delivered by far the best result in the oil test, with a clear win over every other brand including the runners-up, and it finished fourth in the adhesive test. It attacks grease quickly without feeling as greasy as many competitors. It was the most expensive per ounce among the winners, but it also had the single strongest individual test result.
How the Field Performed Overall
All fourteen products were graded A through F in each test category. Gojo Natural Orange, Zep TKO, Permatex Fast Orange Extreme, and Zolex Cherry earned A grades in all three categories, which is why they lead this list. Force 5 came in third in the oil test at a fraction of the price, making it the standout value.
The broader field showed real gaps. Some formulas that performed well on one challenge struggled badly on another, and a plain dish detergent, while outperforming a few hand cleaners on grease, was still clearly beaten by the leaders. When the tested grades were tallied, there was a big difference between first place and last place.

A few texture notes from extended hands-on use: some people prefer thick, greasy pastes, but a lower-viscosity cleaner that wipes away quickly is more practical when you cannot rinse right away. That consideration factored into the overall recommendations above.
Buying Advice
For most workshop and garage users, Permatex Fast Orange Extreme is the safest all-around pick: top tar performance, near-top adhesive performance, and the most agreeable texture of the entire group. If price per ounce matters most, Force 5 at roughly 10 cents per ounce delivers genuine near-top-tier cleaning for a tenth of the cost of some premium competitors.
If you work with adhesives and tire cement regularly, Zep TKO and Gojo Natural Orange both held up well there. And if you want the single strongest oil-cutting performance and do not mind paying more per ounce, Zolex Cherry is the one to beat. All of these are sold in sizes from small bench bottles to gallon jugs, so match the size to how often you actually get filthy.

Conclusion
Price and performance are not directly linked in the heavy-duty hand cleaner category. The best performers span from 15 to 41 cents per ounce, and the cheapest product tested was also one of the best overall values. Pick based on the mess you actually face: Permatex Fast Orange Extreme for all-around power and feel, Force 5 for budget volume, Zep TKO or Gojo Natural Orange for balanced grit, and Zolex Cherry when oil and grease are the constant enemy.
