Introduction

A ceramic coating can make a huge difference in how your car looks and how long the paint finish lasts. But with prices ranging from $13 to $110, the question is whether the budget options perform anywhere near the premium ones. We tested seven ceramic coatings across a series of demanding chemical exposures to find out which ones truly protect paint and plastic.

How We Tested

We prepared a front hood by washing it with strip wash, using a clay bar to remove contaminants, and applying an iron remover to break down brake dust. The surface was washed again to ensure it was perfectly clean before any coating was applied.

We measured the slickness of the bare paint using a digital push pull meter with a weighted sponge. The bare paint required 3.3 lb of force to slide the sponge. We then divided the hood into eight test areas and applied each ceramic coating according to its instructions.

Each coating was also applied to a polycarbonate sheet to test performance on plastic. All products were given 48 hours to fully cure in a temperature controlled environment at around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Slickness and Water Beading

After curing, we measured slickness again. The Grios and Ethos were the slickest at only 0.6 lb of force to slide the sponge. Hybrid Solutions finished in third place at 0.9 lb, followed by Gtechnic at 1.2 lb. Mother’s and Shine Armor both measured 1.3 lb. Avalon King was less slick at 2 lb, and Geon required the most force at 3.8 lb.

Water beading performance was assessed visually. The Grios, Ethos, Geon, and Gtechnic formed the tightest, most uniform water beads and received the best possible rating. Hybrid Solutions and Mother’s performed very well with slightly less uniform beading. Shine Armor and Avalon King showed noticeably weaker hydrophobic performance.

Durability Testing

We exposed all coatings to a series of harsh chemicals to test durability. This included strip wash applied three times, iron remover, bug and tar remover, wheel and tire cleaner, and finally a powerful degreaser.

After the strip wash exposure, the Grios, Ethos, Geon, and Gtechnic were still repelling water extremely well. Hybrid Solutions held up better than Mother’s, which lost significant performance. Shine Armor was largely wiped out after this first round of testing.

The iron remover proved more challenging. The Geon and Gtechnic continued to perform as good as new, along with the Grios and Ethos. Hybrid Solutions dropped in performance, while Mother’s and Shine Armor lost most of their hydrophobic qualities. Avalon King struggled significantly.

Bug and tar remover caused further degradation. The Geon and Gtechnic remained essentially unaffected, still forming tight water beads. The Grios continued to impress despite being a spray on wipe product. Ethos showed some loss in performance, while the Avalon King was nearly used up.

After exposure to wheel and tire cleaner, the Geon and Gtechnic still had the best possible rating. The Grios remained in third place. Ethos lost some ground, while Hybrid Solutions was nearly depleted. Mother’s, Shine Armor, and Avalon King were all effectively used up.

The final test with a degreaser was too powerful for most coatings. Hybrid Solutions was completely used up. The Grios continued to impress with water still forming mostly beads. Ethos was largely depleted. The Geon and Gtechnic remained remarkably resilient, with the Geon showing a very small advantage in water beading action.

Performance on Plastic

We also tested each coating on polycarbonate sheets using only hot water to wash them. The Geon finished in first place with very strong hydrophobic performance. The Gtechnic finished in second place, and Ethos finished in third.

The Hybrid Solutions was still repelling water after hot water exposure. Mother’s performed better than both Hybrid Solutions and Shine Armor on plastic. The Ethos edged out the Grios in a close comparison. The Geon performed by far the best at repelling water, with the Gtechnic close behind.

Final Slickness Results

After all chemical exposure, we measured slickness again. The Ethos was the slickest at 2.3 lb of force, followed by the Grios at 2.6 lb. The Gtechnic measured 2.5 lb. The Geon improved slightly from its initial measurement to 3.3 lb. Hybrid Solutions was nearly used up at 3.2 lb. Mother’s measured 3.6 lb, while Shine Armor and Avalon King both measured 3.9 lb.

Ease of Application

All of the spray on wipe products were very quick and easy to apply, receiving the best possible rating. This includes the Hybrid Solutions, Mother’s, Shine Armor, Grios, and Ethos.

The three hand applied products, Avalon King, Geon, and Gtechnic, do take more time and effort, but they are still very easy to apply. They received a rating of 1.5, which is still pretty good.

Buying Advice

If you are looking for a spray on wipe product, the Grios is by far the most durable option. It was still protecting the paint after a very challenging test, making it the clear choice among the budget friendly spray coatings.

For those willing to spend more and put in the extra time and effort, the Geon outperformed all the spray on wipe products and proved to be the most durable. It provides very good paint protection and held up remarkably well through every chemical test.

The Gtechnic performed very well and finished in a very close second place behind the Geon. The finish was so close that either brand would be a solid choice, so go with whichever one is least expensive.
