Atlas 46 Yorktown Tool Roll Review: A Made-in-USA Tool Roll That Thinks Like an Overlander

The second-generation Atlas 46 Yorktown tool roll combines US-sourced materials, smart double-zipper pockets, and a clever hurry-up stow mode for trail and road use.

Introduction

Some tool storage is designed for the workshop bench, and some is designed for the back of a truck. The Atlas 46 Yorktown tool roll sits firmly in the second camp. This second-generation version is a fully US-made, US-sourced roll built around four individual tool pockets and one multi-purpose pocket, and it packs a few genuinely thoughtful ideas that make it especially appealing for overlanders, off-roaders, and anyone who keeps a serious tool stash in a vehicle.

We spent time stacking it out with sockets, pliers, a light, a magnet, and a trauma pack, and came away impressed with how flexible the layout is.

Design and Build: Built for Vertical or Horizontal Use

The Yorktown holds four tool pockets and one flatter multi-purpose pocket, each 16 inches wide. The tool pockets measure roughly 3 by 3 inches, which is a generous square for pliers, sockets, and bulky hand tools, while the multi-purpose pocket is about 5 inches wide and suited to flatter items.

Every pocket uses double zippers. That sounds minor until you use it: it means the roll works either vertically or horizontally. Hanging it on a headrest strap, you enter from the top and tools cannot spill out. Laid flat on a tailgate or shop floor, you can open straight through the center of each pouch for easy access.

Construction is 1000D airjet textured nylon, and the whole thing is made in the USA with US-sourced materials. The stitching and fabric feel appropriate for being thrown in a bed of a pickup and dragged out at a trailhead.

Vehicle-Friendly Packing and Storage

One of the quiet strengths of this shape is how it stores in a vehicle. Rolled and zipped, it slides under a folded-up seat in both a pickup and a 4Runner. That means a large tool stash can live out of sight without eating cargo space.

Capacity is real. In testing, an assortment of pliers fit comfortably with room to spare, and the pockets were intentionally not overpacked. There is clearly more room available for those who want to stack things tighter.

Removable straps add mounting flexibility. A headrest strap lets you hang the roll down the back of a seat, and removable identification labels help you mark what lives where.

Same-Side Wrench Access and High-Viz Interior

The biggest functional change from the previous generation is the wrench section. Previously, you had to flip the roll over to reach your wrenches. Now everything is accessed from the same side, so you can drop the roll in the mud and still get at every tool without turning it over.

The interior is lined in a bright high-visibility orange, which makes identifying and pulling tools easier even in lower light. The version tested is marked for SAE wrenches, and the roll is sold in either SAE or metric configurations, though a metric set happened to fit in the SAE-marked slots.

Beyond the main face, the back of the roll has two full-length zippers, one on each side, that open additional storage. Each side holds roughly half a socket rail in depth, so there is substantial extra packing capacity beyond the visible pockets.

The Hurry Mode: A Giant Zippered Bag When Time Runs Out

The most clever idea in the whole design is what happens when you are in a rush. When weather turns, daylight fades, or you simply need to get moving, you do not have to organize anything. Open the roll up fully, pile every tool straight into the body like a giant shopping bag, zip it closed, and go.

Everything stays contained and secured, and you can re-sort the pockets later when you have time. For overlanding use, where jobs get interrupted and conditions change fast, this is a genuinely useful behavior that most tool rolls simply do not offer. There is still plenty of spare volume even with everything dumped in loose.

Buying Advice

The Atlas 46 Yorktown tool roll makes sense for two overlapping buyers. First, overlanders and off-road drivers who want a compact, low-profile tool kit that lives under a seat and survives rough handling. Second, anyone who values US-made, US-sourced gear and wants a layout that works both hung and flat, with a fallback mode for chaotic moments.

If you need a bench-top organizer with fixed slots for everything, this is not that product. If you need a rugged, flexible roll that tolerates real-world mess, it is an easy recommendation.

Conclusion

The second-generation Yorktown takes a good idea and refines it: same-side wrench access, double-zipper pockets that work in any orientation, a bright interior that speeds up tool identification, and a hurry-mode stow that turns the whole roll into a giant zippered bag. For vehicle-based tool storage, it is one of the more thoughtfully designed options available, and it is built to a standard that matches its intent.
