The system uses dual channel SODIMM RAM running at 6,400 mega transfers per second. The review unit came pre-installed with 64 GB of DDR5 memory. One M.2 slot is PCIe 5.0, while the other is PCIe 4.0, providing flexibility for high-speed storage options.

Specifications and Performance

The ROG NUC 16 is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 9 2980HX Plus, which features 24 cores and 24 threads. This configuration includes eight performance cores that can clock up to 5.5 GHz and 16 efficiency cores that can clock up to 4.7 GHz. The GPU is an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 laptop variant with 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM and a TGP of up to 175 W.

Performance tuning is handled through Armory Crate, which offers several presets including Windows, Balance, Quiet, Performance, and Turbo modes. Turbo mode was used for all gaming tests, as it raises the TGP and TVP for higher clocks. A manual mode is also available, allowing users to adjust the CPU power limits up to 175 W, the GPU TGP up to 150 W, and fan curves directly.

In synthetic benchmarks, the system delivered impressive results. Cinebench R24 single-core scored 135, and multi-core scored 2,140, both topping the comparison lists. 3DMark Steel Nomad produced a total score of 6,339, while 3DMark Time Spy reached 23,432. These numbers indicate strong performance across both CPU and GPU workloads.

Gaming Performance

Real-world gaming tests were conducted at 4K resolution with various settings. In Forza Horizon 6 at 4K ultra ray tracing preset without DLSS, the system averaged over 120 FPS. At extreme ray tracing, there were some dips, so DLSS would be needed for that setting, but the visual difference between extreme and ultra ray tracing was minimal during daytime racing.

Another game tested at 4K ultra without DLSS maintained an average in the low 70s FPS, even with heavy particle effects on screen. Resident Evil Requiem with ultra ray tracing required DLSS set to quality to maintain an average in the high 70s FPS, but the visual quality remained excellent. Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4K ultra without DLSS saw performance mostly above 60 FPS, with occasional dips when loading in draw distances, though these were not noticeable without a frame counter.

Cyberpunk 2077 proved to be the most demanding title. At 4K ultra without DLSS, there were significant dips below 60 FPS. Dropping to 1440p without DLSS brought the average above 90 FPS. Enabling DLSS multi frame generation at 4K ultra ray tracing with the X4 setting resulted in an average of over 150 FPS, though this includes generated frames. The ability to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with ultra ray tracing at such high frame rates is remarkable for a small form factor PC.

Thermals and Power Consumption

In turbo mode, 4K gaming CPU temperatures averaged 73 degrees Celsius, with a maximum recorded temperature of 85 degrees during all testing, including benchmarks. GPU temperatures averaged 61 degrees during 4K gaming, with a maximum of 68 degrees. These temperatures are well within safe limits for sustained gaming sessions.

Power consumption from the wall was measured with a kilowatt meter. At idle, the system pulled around 18 watts, which would be lower in quiet mode. 4K video playback increased consumption to around 23 watts. While playing AAA games at 4K, the system averaged 260 watts from the wall, a reasonable figure given the performance on offer.

Buying Advice

The ASUS ROG NUC 16 20th Anniversary Edition is an exceptional piece of hardware, but it is not for everyone. The price is substantial, and for the same amount, a larger desktop PC could be built with even more performance. However, that larger system would not match this form factor. The ROG NUC 16 is all about delivering high-end gaming performance in a compact package that fits easily on a desk or in a living room setup.

This mini PC is best suited for those who value space efficiency and want a powerful system without the bulk of a traditional tower.
