Introduction

The ASUS ROG Harpe Ace has been on the radar since it first appeared at Computex, and after spending a couple of months with it, it is clear this is a serious contender in the flagship wireless gaming mouse space. It packs a solid shell, 8K optical switches, a web-based configurator, Bluetooth, RGB on the scroll wheel, and all of that in a 48 g package that is not small by any stretch. At roughly 126 mm long, 64 mm wide, and just under 40 mm high, it sits on the larger side of the spectrum. The price is on the larger side as well at $169.99 US, placing it at the very top of the market alongside Razer.

Who This Mouse Is For

The Harpe Ace is aimed at gamers who want a top-tier wireless mouse with low weight, high polling rates, and a shape that supports multiple grip styles. The three major shape updates from the original Harpe Ace include increased side tapers for easier lift-off, side buttons that have been rotated back and spaced further apart, and a length cut by almost 1.5 mm with a steeper cut-off on the hump. Those last two changes are important because they help the mouse avoid filling out the palm too much.

For a hand measuring 20.5 by 10.5 cm, the original Harpe Ace was essentially only comfortable in a relaxed claw grip. It was too big to fingertip, and relaxing the hand fully to get support under the knuckles pushed the mouse forward. With this redesign, both fingertip and claw grips work well without the whole mouse pushing forward. The main buttons sit at essentially the same overall height with the same low front height, and in hand it feels extremely similar to the Viper V3 Pro. This opens the mouse up to people with smaller hand sizes as well.

Build Quality and Design

The build is very solid. ASUS makes a point of the bio-based nylon used on the shell, which is made from materials derived from the castor plant. It is a fancy way to say plastic, but ASUS claims it is 30% more durable and reduces the carbon footprint of each shell by 70% compared to standard ABS plastic. The shell feels strong for its size and weight, with no creaking or flexing. There is some up and down rattle on the main triggers on this early copy, though ASUS says this has been corrected for retail units.

There is dongle storage on the body, and the mouse uses larger glides front and back this time instead of small corner feet. These glides are super thick with rounded edges and are really nice for stock feet. The coating is much different from the original version, moving from a textured finish to a smooth matte grippy coating. The new coating does pick up fingerprints easily, but coatings that do that tend to be more effective, and that is definitely the case here. At a glance it looks similar to the Viper V3 Pro or the Superlight, but in use it is grippier.

Laser cut grips are included if desired. They were mandatory with the original coating, but here they are way more optional. They do add a couple of grams to the weight, and unless the look is preferred, they can be skipped. An extra set of glides, an extender, and a cable are also included. The cable is thin and flexible, more like a paracord than a standard cable, which is a nice touch.

Switches, Scroll Wheel, and Sensor

The fronts of the triggers are rounded off now, so they are not sharp for those with a forward grip style. They are shaped a little differently too, sloping more toward the scroll wheel rather than being grooved all the way up. The mouse uses optical switches, the same ones seen in the Extreme. They work on light rather than mechanical contacts, so no debounce delay is needed, and they are rated for 100 million clicks. They feel good and do not have the crunchy feel of some early opticals. They sound like opticals, but mildly, and are extremely close to the Viper V3 Pro in feel.

Side buttons are good and crispy. The front is near perfect, while the rear has just a touch more pre-travel, though it is not noticeable during play. There is no real post-travel on this copy, and the whole assembly feels very solid. Placement is nearly perfect for a hand measuring 20.5 by 10.5 cm.

The scroll wheel still has RGB, and its main purpose is to show what changes are being made on the hardware itself. It has really defined tactile notches with no ghost input issues, and the deep press can be spammed reliably. The trigger redesign works well to guide the finger in, and it responds instantly during frantic in-game moments.

The sensor is the ROG Aim Point optical, which is dialed in with no notes. It is backed up by 8K Speednova wireless, which works with no booster, just a small dongle. Running 8K wireless with no issues is impressive. For battery, the bump from 1,000 Hz to 2K generally provides the biggest performance boost with the least impact on battery life. After that, gains in latency and cursor smoothness are minuscule even on a super high refresh monitor. Higher polling rates also work in wired mode, not just wireless.

The Speednova wireless is very good, with super low latency and minimal interference. It frequency hops and is really efficient on the battery, with no surprises in game and no weird behavior.

Software and On-Mouse Controls

There is no Armory Crate on this mouse. Instead, it uses the web-based configurator called Gear Link. It is pretty full-featured, with button remapping and speed shift, which provides a secondary function layer at the expense of a primary function. It supports up to four DPI levels in steps of one, angle snapping, motion sync at all polling rates under 8K, surface calibration, lift-off distance, and rotation angle tuning.

On the mouse itself, there is a DPI cycle button on the bottom. Users can toggle lift-off distance from low to high, change polling rate, and toggle in and out of zone mode. Zone mode is a game-focused mode where DPI and polling rate can be set in Gear Link. It also kills the lighting and pulls the sensor out of power saving mode, so it is ready all the time. Performance-wise, the mouse runs wide-open throttle with no concern for battery life.

Battery life is rated at 101 hours with no RGB or 84 hours with RGB, but those specs are for 1,000 Hz. In 8K zone mode, expect about 20 hours. That can be stretched a bit more in regular power saving mode. Bluetooth mode is also available, making this a versatile option for different use cases.

Buying Advice

The ASUS ROG Harpe Ace is stacked with features. It is in many ways very similar to the Razer Viper V3 Pro, a mouse that is often recommended. The Harpe Ace improves in a fair number of areas: the coating is a little better, it has Bluetooth and RGB, it shaves about 6 g of weight, it has better factory glides, and it uses a web-based config instead of running Synapse full-time. Outside of some shape differences on the main triggers, they play extremely similar. Minus the trigger rattle on this early copy, both have top-tier build quality.

For those with the budget for a flagship mouse at this tier, this is an easy recommend. It is definitely one to check out.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Harpe Ace delivers on its promise of a lightweight, high-performance wireless gaming mouse. The refined shape opens it up to more grip styles, the optical switches feel great, the sensor is dialed, and the wireless performance is top-tier. The web-based configurator is a welcome change, and the inclusion of Bluetooth adds versatility. While the price is at the top of the market, the feature set justifies it for gamers who want the best.
