Race-Day Test: Asics Metaspeed Sky+ With Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar and 255

A 10K race test covering the Asics Metaspeed Sky+ racing shoe plus the Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar and Forerunner 255, with first impressions from a real event.

Introduction

Race day is the only true test for racing gear, and a flat, fast 10K event made the ideal setting to try three products together: the Asics Metaspeed Sky+ as the race shoe, with the Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar and Garmin Forerunner 255 on the wrists. After months of injury and no speed training since February, the goal was simple: see how fast the legs would allow over the first 5K, then enjoy the rest.

The Race Setting

The event is a 10K run through four laps of a north London park, a course that is not the most scenic but is genuinely well suited to fast times. The route is wide and open, with plenty of space to settle into a rhythm, and while there is some undulation, the long downhills reward anyone who plans for them, allowing real pace to be picked up after the first kilometre.

The race plan was to attack the first half at top speed, assess how the leg responded, and treat the second half as an enjoyable cool-down. The first two kilometres came in at around 3:30 per kilometre, holding on to finish with roughly four-minute kilometres at the end. The result landed around 19:03 for the 5K effort, just short of a PB, but a very satisfying comeback race after a long injury layoff.

Asics Metaspeed Sky+: First Impressions

This was the second outing in the Metaspeed Sky+, after an easy run that felt pleasant but similar to the original Metaspeed Sky. On race day, however, the difference became easier to feel. The shoe is highly propulsive, with a lovely bouncing motion that encourages a quick cadence, and it delivered a noticeably faster feeling when it counted.

The original Metaspeed Sky has long been a favourite, consistently ranked as one of the best carbon-plated racers available, and the Sky+ feels like a slight step up. The closest comparison remains the Vaporfly family: the ride character is remarkably similar, and few other shoes get this close. If the Vaporfly were unavailable, this would be the first alternative choice for a race. The plan is to test it at more distances soon, since the 5K today was only a starting point.

Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar: Style and Feel

The Forerunner 955 Solar has been worn for about a week, and the first impression is that it is a genuinely beautiful watch. Coming from a Fenix 6 Pro, the interface takes a little adjustment, but the controls feel familiar and the overall experience is smooth. GPS acquisition is excellent, locking on almost immediately, and the screen is very clear in all conditions tested so far.

Most testing so far has been limited to easy training runs, so a fuller verdict on its advanced features will come later. But on looks, comfort, and everyday function, this watch has been preferred to the Fenix 6 Pro during the week of wear, which is high praise from a long-time Fenix user.

Garmin Forerunner 255 and GPS Accuracy on Race Day

The Forerunner 255 mirrors much of what makes the 955 appealing in a smaller, more affordable package. Both watches were worn simultaneously during the race and recorded identical times, with kilometre updates arriving from each device at exactly the same moment throughout.

More importantly, the accuracy was spot on. During the 5K race segment, both watches picked up the course markers and the finish line perfectly, with no drifting or lag. As with the 955, the deeper features have not been fully explored yet, and a complete review will follow once they have had more time on the wrist.

Overall Buying Advice

For anyone choosing between these three, the decision comes down to role. The Asics Metaspeed Sky+ is a dedicated race-day weapon best suited to fast efforts from 5K up to the marathon, and it earns its place for anyone chasing PBs. The Forerunner 955 Solar suits runners who want a premium, great-looking watch with a bright screen and strong GPS, while the Forerunner 255 delivers the same core GPS accuracy and reliability in a more accessible package. Both Garmin watches proved trustworthy in exactly the scenario that matters most: race day.

Conclusion

A successful race test all round: the Metaspeed Sky+ felt propulsive and fast in its first proper race outing, and both Garmin watches delivered identical, accurate GPS data with race-pace splits matching the course markers perfectly. The 955 Solar stands out for design and feel, the 255 for value, and the Sky+ for performance. More in-depth reviews of the watches and longer-distance testing of the shoe will follow.
