Apple Watch SE 2nd Generation Review: The Value Pick for Fitness-Focused Buyers
A closer look at the second generation Apple Watch SE, covering its updated hardware, sports tracking accuracy, battery life, and where it falls short of the Series 8.
Introduction
The original Apple Watch SE was built around a simple idea: give buyers all the core smartwatch functionality, tight iPhone integration, and a solid set of health and fitness features without asking them to pay for the fancier hardware found on higher-end models. The second generation SE continues that approach, adding refreshed hardware and a handful of new features while keeping the value proposition firmly intact. After putting it through running, cycling, and weight training sessions, it turns out to be a very capable fitness watch in its own right, not just a budget option.

Design, Sizes, and Connectivity
The hardware changes here are subtle. The back of the case now uses a color-matched nylon composite material that Apple says reduces the watch’s carbon footprint by about 80 percent, and it also trims the weight by roughly 3 grams. The difference is noticeable if you are paying attention, but it is not dramatic, and both generations are comfortable watches to wear. Three colors are available: white, silver, and the midnight finish, in either 40mm or 44mm sizes. The 44mm version sits comfortably on a 187mm circumference wrist.
Connectivity comes in GPS and GPS + Cellular variants. Either version can track outdoor activities without your phone thanks to the built-in GPS, while the cellular model adds texts and calls on the go for the price of an add-on plan.

Performance and New Features
Under the hood, the second generation SE gets the S8 SiP dual-core processor, a meaningful jump from the S5 in the original and roughly 20 percent faster in use. A new high-g accelerometer works together with the gyroscope, barometer, microphone, and GPS to detect severe car crashes and contact emergency services. It is a feature you hope never to see triggered, but it is a smart combination of sensors and phone connectivity. On LTE-enabled models, crash detection works even without your phone nearby as long as the watch has a cell connection.
Sleep tracking also gets more advanced, with sleep stage tracking and a detailed breakdown visible both on the watch and in the Health app. That comes courtesy of watchOS 9, so other Apple Watches that support the same software version benefit from it as well.
Battery Life and Low Power Mode
Apple claims the familiar 18-hour all-day battery life, but in practice the estimate tends to be conservative. Around 24 hours is realistic, even with some outdoor activity tracking mixed in.
The new Low Power Mode introduced with watchOS 9 stretches that to roughly a day and a half by disabling background heart rate measurements and limiting notifications. The nice part is that workout GPS and heart rate accuracy stay at full quality in this mode. One small quirk: workouts in Low Power Mode no longer display hundredths of a second. A workout-specific Low Power Mode that reduces GPS and heart rate sampling to save battery was also planned for later release, but it was not available at the time of testing.

Fitness and Sports Tracking
This is where the SE earns its keep. There is a huge library of workout profiles: indoor and outdoor running, indoor and outdoor cycling, weight training, pool swimming, open water swimming, and many more. watchOS 9 adds richer workout views, accessible by rotating the digital crown or swiping on the screen during a session. There is also running power, a newer metric that measures the force needed to propel yourself forward and is less skewed by grade, wind, and surface changes than pace alone. Numbers vary between devices since no industry standard exists yet, but the trends align, which is what matters for training. Syncing the data through the HealthFit iOS app makes exporting runs with running power to Strava straightforward.

GPS Accuracy
GPS tracking is excellent. On a test run, the SE’s track lined up essentially perfectly with reference devices, and on a longer bike ride it stayed right in line as well. In past Apple Watches there was occasionally some smoothing around corners, but that is no longer apparent here, even through the curvy sections of the ride.
Heart Rate Accuracy
The heart rate sensor appears to be the same as the previous generation’s, which was already very good. During indoor cycling, the SE followed every change in heart rate closely, with only a couple of seconds of lag on hard sprints, which is normal for wrist-based optical sensors. Outdoor running was solid, with one brief blip mid-run. On a road ride, with handlebar grip and road vibration working against the sensor, the results were impressively clean, with just one short spot reading a few beats per minute high. Weight training, often the toughest test for wrist-based sensors, went surprisingly well too: bicep curls, tricep extensions, and high-intensity intervals all tracked closely against a chest strap, with only a slight spike on one final interval.
Buying Advice
The second generation SE is a great option if you want to save money without giving up a genuinely good smartwatch and a very capable fitness device. What you give up compared to the Series 8 is the always-on display, ECG, and blood oxygen saturation measurements. If those features matter to you, the higher-end model is the better fit. If they do not, the SE delivers a lot for the money and performs very well across running, cycling, and gym work.
Conclusion
The Apple Watch SE 2nd Generation is a thoughtful update rather than a radical redesign: a faster processor, crash detection, improved sleep tracking, and Low Power Mode, all wrapped in slightly lighter hardware. For anyone who wants dependable smartwatch features and strong sports tracking without stepping up to the Series 8, it is an easy recommendation.
