Allegory Ancients Pen Review: Writing With 50,000-Year-Old Wood

A Kickstarter ballpoint pen built from ancient Kauri wood between 40,000 and 50,000 years old, with standard Parker G2 refills and solid everyday ergonomics.

Introduction

Every so often a pen shows up that makes you want to tell someone about it before you have even finished writing with it. The Ancients pen from Allegory is one of those. It is a machined metal ballpoint pen whose barrel is made from ancient Kauri wood, material that has been buried for between 40,000 and 50,000 years. I backed it on Kickstarter back around October 2022 and it has quietly become one of the most distinctive pens in my collection.

What Makes This Pen Different

The story starts with the wood. Roughly 50,000 years ago, a natural event downed a stand of Kauri trees that were already around 2,000 years old. That same event created bogs, and the bog conditions protected the fallen trees from the elements. Today those trees are found under farmland and are carefully excavated, then used for pens, tables, and other furniture pieces.

The close-up grain is genuinely beautiful, with a deep green tone you simply do not see in conventional pen woods. Allegory offered three barrel materials: ancient Kauri at 40,000 to 50,000 years old, bog oak at 4,000 to 5,000 years old, and Bethlehem Olive Wood at 1,500 to 3,500 years old. The insert card that ships with the pen confirms the material’s age.

For context, the Kickstarter campaign raised about $144,000 from more than 1,100 backers, and buyers could choose either the ballpoint pen or a mechanical pencil version.

Design and Ergonomics

The version I went with pairs the ancient Kauri barrel with a burnt bronze hardware finish, which turns out to be a great match for the wood’s coloring. Allegory offers five hardware finishes in total: raw aluminum, gunmetal, burnt bronze, black anodized, and raw brass.

Hand writing with a thick metal pen on a notepad

In the hand, the pen has a nice length and feels comfortable to hold for long sessions. The grip section features very aggressive knurling at the tip, which makes for a secure grip while writing. The thickness is a little on the wide side, though not so thick that writing becomes uncomfortable.

One design nitpick: the pocket clip and the thrusting mechanism on top are finished in raw aluminum rather than the burnt bronze, so they clash slightly with the rest of the hardware. It would look more uniform if both matched. Also note the top mechanism has no click; it is a twist-action pen.

Writing Performance and Refills

A pen is only as good as it writes, and this one feels pretty nice. It uses any Parker G2 style refill, which is fantastic news because Parker G2 refills are widely available anywhere that sells pens. If you are familiar with that ink cartridge, you know it glides right across the paper, and this pen is no exception.

Buying Advice

I paid $79 for this pen through the Kickstarter campaign, and the regular retail price is expected to be around $109. That puts it in enthusiast territory, but the ancient Kauri barrel makes it a genuine conversation starter, especially when you hand it to someone and explain what the wood actually is.

If you want a dependable daily ballpoint with standard refills and a story no other pen in your drawer can tell, the Ancients pen is an easy recommendation. If you prefer slimmer, lighter pens, the tapered-grip thickness profile may take some adjustment.

Conclusion

The Allegory Ancients pen combines a practical, refill-friendly ballpoint platform with a barrel material that is tens of thousands of years old. The mixed-finish clip and top mechanism are small blemishes, but the wood, the knurled grip, and the smooth Parker G2 writing experience make it one of the most unique pens you can own.
